Crypto tax calculators for U.S. taxpayers
Choose a federal tax estimate or records check based on the question you need to answer. CoinReckon shows what each tool calculates from the records you give it, and where its result stops.

What these calculators can answer
Are you estimating the tax on a sale, assigning purchase lots, checking a broker form, weighing a loss sale or accounting for staking rewards? Each is a separate task with its own calculator here, and the outputs are not interchangeable: a lot comparison shows possible assigned costs, not your final tax bill.
Every tool works only from the details you enter. It cannot fetch a history you never entered or supply a missing purchase price, and it returns an estimate, not a filed return. These are free informational tools; the IRS has not approved them, and they neither prepare nor file a return.
Tax-software products offer broader import and filing workflows. An automated import can still drop a wallet or a transfer and can lose a lot designation. Our tools take the narrower route and keep every input and assumption in view, while the crypto tax overview covers the wider filing workflow.
Choose the tool for your question

Start with the output you need. A broker form that disagrees with your ledger calls for a records check; a planned sale calls for a gain estimate.
Matching is slower than it sounds. Form 1099-DA has no dedicated per-transaction ID box, so you line up the asset, disposal date, units and proceeds yourself. A duplicate the check suggests is a clue to investigate, not an official error finding.
The form does not capture every kind of on-chain activity either, so reconcile it before its figures feed a sale estimate (the form's boxes and codes explain each line).
A transfer between your own accounts is not a purchase record merely because it shows up as an incoming deposit.
Next come the records you actually hold: purchase dates, quantities, acquisition costs, fees and the wallet or account history. Gain on a sale generally starts with proceeds after selling fees minus cost basis, including applicable acquisition costs.
For activity from January 1, 2025, basis tracking moves to a per-wallet or per-account framework, and pre-2025 basis may require a documented transition allocation under Revenue Procedure 2024-28; the wallet allocation guide explains what to verify.
Rates and thresholds depend on the selected tax year and filing status, and your holding period and the rest of your taxable income can also move a federal estimate. Crypto held one year or less is generally short-term, while a longer holding period can receive long-term capital-gain treatment. Staking rewards can instead create ordinary income when you gain control of them, before any later sale of those units.
One flat rate applied to all of these events conceals too much (capital gains rates and staking rewards have their own guides).
Finally, read what the result leaves out. The staking estimate works from rewards you can sell. It does not settle how a liquid-staking or rebasing token is treated.
For lots, FIFO is the default when digital asset units are not adequately identified, and the sources we checked conflict over a claimed universal FIFO requirement for 2026.
Assume neither that your preferred choice is available nor that Specific Identification has disappeared: check the current IRS instructions and your broker's identification procedures first, using the lot-records guide.
Before a sale, the usual order is to check the broker form against your records first. If the assigned basis needs attention, compare your purchase lots next, then estimate the tax on the sale.
A loss sale goes to the loss estimator, with the dated wash-sale discussion read separately.
Missing records, a large consequential position, an IRS inquiry or an unsettled token classification warrant help from a qualified tax professional.
The Form 8949 walkthrough covers return reporting; if an actual IRS notice has arrived, use the CP2000 response guide.

- 1099-DA Reconciliation Check flags differences between form lines and your records. It cannot correct a broker form or match every transaction automatically.
- Crypto Capital Gains Tax Calculator estimates the incremental federal tax on one disposal. It is not a full-return calculation.
- Cost Basis Method Comparison sets FIFO beside an illustrative, documented specific-lot choice. It does not validate an undocumented lot designation.
- Staking Income Tax Estimator estimates additional ordinary income and tax from reward values and the date you gained control, a date you must determine from your records.
- Tax-Loss Harvesting Estimator approximates how a proposed loss could offset gains and affect a carryforward, without promising a deduction or a particular saving.

Check one Form 1099-DA line
Set one line from your Form 1099-DA beside your own record of the same sale. The check flags proceeds beyond your tolerance, basis differences, date conflicts and unmatched sales. It calculates no tax.
Your figures stay in this browser. Nothing is sent or saved.
Leave box 1g blank when the form's box is blank; enter 0 only for an actual zero basis. Estimate - not tax advice.
Estimate: reconciliation status by row
Estimate - not tax advice. The status comes only from the figures you enter, covers federal reporting only, and cannot establish that a broker made an error. Why the basis field is blank
Tax year compared: 2025. Rule source: IRS, Instructions for Form 1099-DA (box layout from the 2026 revision; a form's own year revision governs its final box wording) and IRS, Instructions for Form 8949, as of September 26, 2026.
Questions
Which calculator should I use if my 1099-DA has no basis?
Start with the reconciliation check and your acquisition and transfer records. Brokers may report proceeds with the basis left empty. This happens notably with assets transferred in or acquired before 2026 (see the IRS explanation of Form 1099-DA).
A blank field is not a zero-cost purchase. If the basis stays unknown, a zero-basis run in the sale calculator is a warning about missing data, not proof that zero is correct. Why a basis field may be blank walks through the causes.
Can one calculator give me my total federal crypto tax?
No. The sale and staking tools estimate specific increments from supplied inputs; they do not compute every interaction on a federal return.
Is the highest-cost-first option a separate IRS cost-basis method?
No. Specific Identification is the other formal assignment method besides FIFO, and choosing highest-cost lots is a strategy within it, not an independently recognized "HIFO method."
It depends on identifying units adequately and on time, with records to back that up, as the IRS digital-asset transaction guidance explains.
Without that, FIFO may apply.
Are staking rewards and their later sale the same taxable event?
No. Within Revenue Ruling 2023-14's stated scope, the reward's value is ordinary income when a cash-method taxpayer gains dominion and control, and that recognized value becomes the basis for a later disposal.
The disposal is a separate gain or loss calculation. The ruling does not resolve every liquid-staking design.
Can I rely on a loss-harvesting estimate before repurchasing crypto?
Not by itself. Directly held crypto and shares of a crypto fund do not necessarily receive the same wash-sale treatment. Proposed changes to the rules for direct holdings had not been enacted when we researched this page, but legislative status moves, so check current wash-sale law before acting.
Consider, too, whether the transaction has a genuine economic purpose. Nothing makes an immediate sale and repurchase risk-free.
