TurboTax can be a sensible filing destination when your 2025 crypto records are already complete.

The harder question is whether the records reaching TurboTax cover every exchange, wallet movement, disposal and income entry.

This review separates direct import from prior reconciliation, then compares the dated price presentations rather than assigning crypto filing one universal price.

What TurboTax does and who should consider it

TurboTax is the filing destination in this decision, not a specialist multi-wallet reconciliation engine. A one-exchange user with a complete, supported record set may be able to import directly; a reader with several exchanges or self-custody records should calculate and reconcile first. For broader criteria, compare crypto tax software by our published criteria.

Use this decision path before opening the return:

  1. Are every disposal and income event in one supported exchange? If so, compare the imported date range with your complete records. When it matches, import into TurboTax and review the return and forms. When it does not, reconcile missing or duplicate records first.
  2. Did another exchange, wallet, or self-custody path hold activity? Calculate and reconcile across sources, then transfer the resulting figures through a documented partner or export path. If the answer is unclear, confirm the source and date range before choosing direct import.

“Supported” describes the source path, not a guarantee that the resulting record set is complete. One missing wallet transfer can make an otherwise plausible import misleading.

Pricing, transaction limits and what is free

The crypto-specific TurboTax page presents $79 USD as the federal starting point for a self-prepared 2025 federal return with crypto, based on the terms published in 2026. The same page pairs $209 with Expert Assist and states that state filing is separate. These are scoped offers, not one universal price for every filer.

The separate general product grid uses different product and eligibility scopes.

It lists Free Edition at $0 federal and $0 state for qualifying simple returns, Deluxe from $59 federal, Premium from $139 federal, Expert Assist Basic from $59 federal, and Full Service from $100 per return.

A $0 Free Edition listing is not a blanket promise that a crypto return qualifies.

TurboTax's 2025 capacity claim is 20,000 crypto transactions through automatic import. The claim is tied to the 2026 filing season and does not establish that a complex history has been reconciled.

The $79 and $209 presentations should remain distinct from the general grid. Check the cart, because product scope, filing assistance and state charges can change the amount you see.

Form 1099-DA: what TurboTax actually does

For the 2026 filing season, TurboTax Online supports Form 1099-DA data through a supported broker or exchange import for tax year 2025, according to the terms published in 2026. Importing the form transfers available data. It does not by itself show that TurboTax matched the broker's proceeds and basis to every exchange account, wallet movement or prior transaction.

Start with the form and the records beside it. The following checklist is designed to catch a clean-looking import that does not describe the whole year.

Broker-form versus records checklist

  • Confirm the tax year is 2025 and record the broker or exchange named on the form.
  • Write down the imported source and its date range.
  • Compare the form's activity with wallet movements and transfers from other exchanges.
  • Mark every basis gap before accepting an imported figure.
  • Remove overlapping CSV upload ranges that may duplicate records or leave gaps.
  • Record staking, airdrop and mining receipts separately from sale records.
  • Compare the final figures with the records before submitting the return.

If a basis field is blank, check a missing cost basis. For the form fields themselves, read the 1099-DA boxes before importing. The import is a starting data transfer, not evidence that the transaction history has been reconciled.

A separate calculator may produce different results because crypto software can use FIFO, LIFO, HIFO or specific identification. Under HIFO, the highest-cost-basis unit is disposed of first, tending to minimize the period's reported gain against other lot methods. Compare lot-method results rather than changing a method casually inside the filing flow.

From records to a filed return

There are two practical paths.

For a simple single-exchange case, the path is a supported direct exchange import into TurboTax. First confirm that the exchange contains the entire 2025 activity, including disposals and income entries. Then compare the imported result with the exchange history before accepting the figures.

For a multi-exchange or self-custody case, reconcile the sources outside the filing interface. That may mean combining exchange records, wallet history and a separately calculated report before moving the resulting figures into TurboTax through a documented partner or export path. CoinTracker's named TurboTax handoff covers the named TurboTax partnership.

CoinLedger describes CoinLedger's calculated-report export to TurboTax as its own vendor export claim; that claim is not treated here as an Intuit-confirmed partnership.

Overlapping manual upload date ranges are a common cause of duplicate or missing records. A second wallet can create the same problem: the imported sales look reasonable until a transfer is counted as a sale or an incoming asset is absent. This is a scenario to test against your records, not a documented TurboTax test result.

Capital-gains data and crypto income do not occupy the same path. Sale gains belong with the reconciled sales records and the federal return forms TurboTax prepares. Staking, airdrop and mining receipts require separate income entry rather than being assumed to come from a sale import.

Check when staking rewards become income. For reconciled sales, report reconciled sales on Form 8949.

For tax year 2025, TurboTax prepares Form 8949 and Schedule D within the filed federal return in TurboTax Premium, with no separate tax-form export under this product scope, according to the terms published in 2026.

The useful handoff is therefore the figures and records entering the return, not an assumption that a filing screen has independently rebuilt your history.

What we could verify and what remains open

The calm verdict is narrow: TurboTax is a mainstream filing destination for a reader whose crypto records are already in usable shape. A multi-exchange 1099-DA history or self-custody history still needs preparation outside the filing interface.

The $79 figure is the page-fact value assigned to the 2025 crypto federal plan under the terms published in 2026. It is not an independently observed current checkout offer. The separate $209 Expert Assist presentation and the general product grid remain relevant because they describe different scopes.

Check the live cart before paying.

Formal registry verification was not part of this dossier. That is not a fraud finding and does not justify a reputation score. We assessed the documented product scopes, import claims and handoff descriptions instead.

TurboTax's official tax-tip material frames the discussion around the 2025 Form 1099-DA filing season. That is separate from the site's default 2026 tax-year context. The distinction matters when a page, form or checkout screen uses “2026” without making clear whether it means filing season or tax year.

Questions before you pay

Does TurboTax calculate my crypto gains for me?

TurboTax can receive supported imported data and prepare the relevant federal return forms, but the result depends on the records and settings supplied. If several exchanges, wallets or missing basis entries are involved, reconcile those records before the import or partner handoff.

If I used only one exchange, can I skip another tool?

Possibly, if that exchange is supported and its records cover every 2025 disposal and income event. Compare the imported date range with the exchange history, then check for wallet transfers and missing basis before relying on direct import.

Will it bring in my staking or airdrop income?

Do not assume that a sale or Form 1099-DA import includes every staking or airdrop receipt. Record those amounts through the applicable income path and keep them distinct from reconciled sale gains; check when staking rewards become income.

Which price will I actually see at checkout?

You may encounter the crypto-specific $79 federal starting point, the $209 Expert Assist presentation, or a product from the general grid, depending on the product and eligibility scope. Confirm the federal product, service level and state fee in the cart. The $0 Free Edition applies to qualifying simple returns, not automatically to every return containing crypto.

Choose direct TurboTax import only after matching the supported source to your full record set. If another exchange, wallet or self-custody path is involved, reconcile first and then move the resulting figures into the filed return. Check the product and state-fee scope at checkout.
