Swan's help page announces Form 1099-DA for tax year 2026 for Personal and Entity clients who sold bitcoin through Bakkt. The same page is silent about Swan-issued forms for 2025 sales.

That distinction matters if you are searching your account for a missing document.

The page also separates bitcoin held continuously with Bakkt from bitcoin deposited or transferred in from elsewhere.

Before you use a form for your return, compare its tax year, payer field, proceeds, and basis with Swan's exports and your original acquisition records.

Does Swan Bitcoin issue a 1099-DA for 2026?

Swan says that Personal and Entity clients who sold bitcoin through custodian Bakkt will receive Form 1099-DA for tax year 2026, according to the Swan help page retrieved September 29, 2026. This is Swan's stated scope for the 2026 form.

The page does not address 2025 sales.

Separately, the IRS says brokers report gross proceeds for digital-asset transactions on or after January 1, 2025, but that general rule does not establish that Swan issued a 2025 Form 1099-DA to its customers.

Swan's tax-form announcement and the IRS digital-assets guidance describe different scopes.

A Form 1099-DA reports digital-asset sale information. For a Swan customer, the useful answer is narrower: Swan's published announcement is for tax year 2026, not a promise of a Swan 2025 form.

Where and when to find the form

For a taxable account, Swan says the 1099-DA will appear on the dashboard and labels it “Coming in 2026.” The page gives no calendar day for delivery. Treat that wording as a year reference, not as a filing-season deadline.

Swan also directs customers to tax exports. The Cointracker.io Tax CSV and the Deposits and Purchases CSV are available from the bottom of the dashboard or through Account Settings → Export Account Data.

Retirement documents follow a different path: Archived Accounts → select the account → Settings → Documents. Keeping those paths separate prevents a retirement-account customer from treating a taxable-account dashboard notice as an IRA document.

Who is named on the form?

Swan's page names Bakkt as the custodian. It does not identify the payer name that will be printed on the Form 1099-DA.

When the form is available, inspect the actual payer field instead of inferring it from the custody arrangement. The custodian named in Swan's explanation and the payer printed on a tax form are not automatically the same field or name.

For contrast only, Public.com's two partner forms describe a separately documented partner arrangement. That comparison does not supply Swan's payer name.

What the form reports, and what it leaves out

On its Bakkt tax-accounting page retrieved September 29, 2026, Swan says bitcoin bought on or after January 1, 2026 and held continuously with Bakkt is covered. For that bitcoin, the form includes proceeds and basis. Swan says FIFO is the default lot method, with HIFO or LIFO selectable for an individual sale.

Bitcoin deposited or transferred in from outside custody is uncovered. Swan describes proceeds reporting for that bitcoin but no reported basis. A blank basis field does not mean your tax basis is zero.

It means your acquisition records matter when you reconcile the sale.

For 2026 covered sales, the IRS Form 1099-DA instructions call for broker-reported basis in the circumstances covered by the form rules (current figure at the IRS).

Swan's customer-facing lot-method choice remains separate from that general reporting requirement.

See covered versus noncovered assets for the broader distinction, or check the broker form against your records when the figures differ.

Bitcoin history Swan category Proceeds on form Basis on form Record the reader needs
Bought on or after January 1, 2026 and held continuously with Bakkt Covered Yes Yes, using the selected lot method Swan sale export and purchase-lot details
Deposited or transferred in after outside custody Uncovered Yes No reported basis Original purchase record, transfer history, and Swan sale export

Consider a simple custody trail: you buy bitcoin outside Swan, transfer it into Bakkt custody, and later sell it through Swan. Swan's stated treatment places that transferred-in bitcoin in the uncovered category. If you later compare a proceeds figure with a blank basis field, look for the original purchase and transfer records rather than entering zero basis.

The IRS's general 2025 rule and Swan's 2026 covered-basis explanation should not be merged into one company-specific promise. The year and custody history control which statement you are applying.

Other forms and account types

A taxable-account bitcoin sale through Bakkt points to Swan's 2026 Form 1099-DA announcement and the dashboard. A retirement account points to a different document path.

Swan lists Form 1099-R, Form 5498, and an RMD statement in its retirement-account table. It says Form 5498 is “Not available on Swan until May,” which is Swan's wording rather than an IRS deadline. The page's overview also names an FMV informational item when it says “up to four,” but the detailed table lists only three.

The retirement row tells non-retirement customers to rely on CSV exports, even though the 1099-DA row above announces a form for qualifying taxable sales. Keep the exports to reconcile that form.

The page is silent on whether a Swan IRA receives a 1099-DA. Do not turn the listed retirement documents into an IRA 1099-DA answer.

Which Swan document am I looking for?

  1. Taxable-account bitcoin sale through Bakkt: Look for Swan's tax-year-2026 1099-DA announcement and the form on your dashboard.
  2. Retirement account: Open Archived Accounts → account → Settings → Documents and look for Swan's listed 1099-R, 5498, or RMD statement.
  3. Deposited bitcoin with missing basis: Pull the Cointracker.io Tax CSV and Deposits and Purchases CSV, then locate the original purchase and transfer records.
  4. Question about an IRA 1099-DA: Treat the question as open because Swan's page does not address it.

Corrections and support

The Swan page read for this article publishes no correction route or form-specific support path. Prepare the records before asking Swan about a mismatch.

Write down the tax year, sale date, proceeds shown, actual payer name, document type, and the transaction or transfer that supports your comparison. Save the relevant CSV rows and original purchase evidence. This is a preparation list, not a conclusion that the form is wrong.

What this means for your filing

Start with the tax year printed or described for the document. Swan's published form announcement concerns 2026, while the IRS's general digital-asset rule separately discusses transactions beginning January 1, 2025. A missing Swan 2025 form cannot be resolved by assuming that the 2026 announcement applies backward.

Use this private form-versus-record checklist before preparing Form 8949:

  • Select the tax year of the transaction, then check the year printed on any document.
  • Inspect the actual payer name and document type on the form.
  • Compare sale dates and proceeds with Swan's Cointracker.io Tax CSV and Deposits and Purchases CSV.
  • Mark every bitcoin deposit or transfer into Bakkt custody.
  • Trace transferred-in bitcoin to the original purchase record and acquisition cost.
  • Note any difference between the form, the CSV, and your records before seeking a correction.

The transfer history is the hinge. Swan says transferred-in bitcoin is uncovered and reports proceeds without basis. Your original acquisition records therefore need to stay with the sale export.

For acquisition cost, the IRS describes digital-asset basis as acquisition cost plus transaction fees, commissions, transfer taxes, and other acquisition costs in its Form 8949 instructions.

Keep the records that support the amount you use.

If the reconciliation is difficult, use check the broker form against your records, then see reconcile missing cost basis or report reconciled sales on Form 8949 for the longer workflows.

Questions about Swan's form

Will Swan send a 1099-DA for my 2025 bitcoin sales?

Swan's help page states a tax-year-2026 Form 1099-DA announcement and is silent on 2025 sales. The separate IRS rule about reporting transactions beginning January 1, 2025 does not establish that Swan issued a 2025 form.

Is Bakkt or Swan listed as the payer?

The page names Bakkt as custodian but does not state the payer printed on the form. Inspect the actual payer field when your document is available.

Why is the basis blank for bitcoin I deposited?

Swan calls deposited or transferred-in bitcoin uncovered and describes proceeds-only reporting for that bitcoin. Use the original acquisition and transfer records to reconcile basis.

Does my Swan IRA get a 1099-DA?

Swan lists Forms 1099-R and 5498 plus an RMD statement for retirement accounts. Its page does not address whether an IRA receives a 1099-DA.
