Venmo provides its own Form 1099-DA for qualifying cryptocurrency sales or exchanges in a Venmo wallet during tax year 2025.
PayPal-wallet activity is described separately on PayPal's Form 1099-DA, even though Venmo is a service of PayPal, Inc. Venmo's crypto-tax Help Center states this policy, checked September 26, 2026.
Does Venmo issue a 1099-DA for 2025?
Beginning with tax year 2025, Venmo provides Form 1099-DA for a sale or exchange of cryptocurrency in a Venmo wallet. This is Venmo's documented policy for 2025 Venmo-wallet crypto activity, not a finding about whether a particular customer's document is complete or accurate.
Venmo's crypto-tax Help Center describes the form and the related records.
PayPal's wallet is a separate record set. Venmo is a service of PayPal, Inc., but the two companies' help pages describe the tax-year-2025 crypto activity on separate, respective Forms 1099-DA. A sale made from a Venmo wallet should stay with Venmo's records; a sale made from a PayPal wallet should stay with PayPal's records.
That distinction matters when both apps appear in your transaction history. Do not combine the forms simply because the corporate parent is shared. Label the wallet that generated each sale before comparing proceeds or basis.
Where and when to find your Venmo form
Venmo notifies eligible users in the app and by email when tax documents are ready. To download the document in the app:
- Open Venmo and select Me.
- Open Settings.
- Select Tax Documents.
- Select Download.
On the Venmo website, use Settings > Tax Documents > Download. These paths are documented in Venmo's tax-document access instructions.
The general furnishing deadline for a broker's 2025 Form 1099-DA was February 17, 2026, under the IRS's digital-asset reporting guidance.
That is an IRS deadline for furnishing the form, not a Venmo-specific promise about the delivery date for your account.
If no document appears, first check the Venmo tax-document area and the email address associated with your account. Keep the search focused on Venmo rather than looking for a combined PayPal document.
What the form reports, and what it leaves out
Venmo's 2025 Form 1099-DA scope is sales or exchanges of cryptocurrency in a Venmo wallet. Venmo also describes a transaction summary listing crypto transactions and a year-end gain/loss statement with cost basis when available. Download those supplemental records with the form.
Do not treat the supplemental statement as a replacement for your own acquisition and transfer records. A Venmo record may not contain the history needed to establish how you acquired an asset before it reached the wallet.
The IRS basis rules change for later activity. For sales after 2025, a broker must report basis on Form 1099-DA for covered digital assets acquired after 2025 in its custodial account and held there until sale. Basis reporting is optional for noncovered assets, including assets acquired before 2026.
Those rules apply to 2026 and later activity, not retroactively to a 2025 disposition. See the IRS Instructions for Form 1099-DA.
Venmo does not document every possible tax situation on this page. Use the form, the supplemental records, and your own source documents together.
What to check against your records
Start with one Venmo-wallet sale rather than adding all crypto activity together. Compare the date and proceeds on the Form 1099-DA with Venmo's transaction summary and year-end gain/loss statement. Then locate the acquisition or transfer record for the asset.
A blank basis field is not zero. For 2026 and later, a digital asset transferred into Venmo's custodial account is noncovered for Form 1099-DA. Venmo is not required to report its basis, although it may report the basis voluntarily.
Your acquisition records remain relevant when the asset entered Venmo through a transfer.
| Activity | Venmo document named in the reviewed material | Record to compare | Documented route if wrong |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 Venmo-wallet crypto sale or exchange | Form 1099-DA | Venmo transaction summary, gain/loss statement, and acquisition or transfer records | Email Venmo at [email protected] with the form type, tax year, and requested change |
| Venmo goods/services payments | Form 1099-K | Venmo payment history and the related goods/services records | Use Venmo's documented Form 1099-K update page |
| Miscellaneous crypto or PYUSD income when applicable | Form 1099-MISC | Venmo income records and the related reward or payment records | Email Venmo at [email protected] with the form type, tax year, and requested change |
| PayPal-wallet crypto sale | Separate PayPal Form 1099-DA | PayPal wallet history and PayPal supplemental records | Follow PayPal's documented tax-document process |
Form-versus-record checklist
- Select tax year 2025.
- Record the issuer as Venmo and identify the document type.
- Export or download the Venmo transaction history and supplemental tax records.
- Match each sale or exchange date and proceeds figure.
- Compare the transaction summary with the gain/loss statement.
- Mark any transfer-in asset and locate its acquisition record.
- Treat a blank basis as an open records issue, not a zero amount.
- Write down the exact mismatch, then use Venmo's documented correction route.
For a two-wallet record sheet, one illustrative row might read: “Venmo wallet, sale on the Venmo summary, compare to Venmo 1099-DA.” A separate row might read: “PayPal wallet, sale on PayPal history, compare to PayPal 1099-DA.” This example is a sorting aid, not a claimed personal test.
Other Venmo forms and who receives them
Venmo documents a Form 1099-K for goods/services payments. It also documents a Form 1099-MISC for specified miscellaneous income, including cryptocurrency or PYUSD rewards when applicable. Those documents cover different activity from the Venmo-wallet sale or exchange scope of Form 1099-DA.
Receiving one Venmo tax document does not mean every Venmo user receives all of them. Match the document to the activity shown in your records.
Which document am I looking for?
- Venmo-wallet crypto sale or exchange: Look for Venmo's Form 1099-DA.
- Venmo goods/services receipt: Look for Venmo's Form 1099-K.
- Miscellaneous crypto or PYUSD reward income when applicable: Look for Venmo's Form 1099-MISC.
- PayPal-wallet crypto sale: Look for PayPal's separate Form 1099-DA.
- A case Venmo does not document here: Case not documented here.
Corrections and Venmo support
For a change to a Venmo Form 1099-DA or Form 1099-MISC, email [email protected]. Include the form type, tax year, and the requested change. Venmo's tax-information update instructions describe this route as of September 26, 2026.
The website edit page applies to the current-year Form 1099-K. It is not the correction route listed for a 1099-DA or 1099-MISC. Keep a copy of the form, the record showing the mismatch, and the message you send.
Venmo says changes can be made after issuance. That statement identifies the available request process; it does not promise that a requested correction will be approved or that a replacement form will have a particular result.
What this means for your filing
Keep the Venmo Form 1099-DA with the Venmo transaction summary and gain/loss statement. Label PayPal activity separately, even when both wallets appear in the same household's records.
Next, identify missing acquisition history. A transfer into Venmo may leave the form without a reported basis, while your own records may still establish the acquisition information needed for reconciliation. Do not enter zero merely because the field is blank.
If a Venmo figure is wrong, record the exact difference and send the requested details to Venmo's correction address.
For general reading on how to reconcile missing cost basis and report reconciled sales on Form 8949, use the site's separate guides.
They explain methods without deciding what belongs on your personal return.
The practical sequence is simple: keep the issuer separate, compare the source records, and document any dispute before contacting Venmo.
Questions about Venmo's form
Does PayPal send the form for crypto I sold in Venmo?
No. Venmo describes its own tax-year-2025 wallet Form 1099-DA, while PayPal describes PayPal-wallet activity on its form. Use the records from the wallet where the sale occurred.
Where do I download my Venmo 1099-DA?
Download it in the app through Me > Settings > Tax Documents > Download, or on the website through Settings > Tax Documents > Download. Venmo notifies eligible users in the app and by email when documents are ready.
Why is cost basis blank after I moved crypto into Venmo?
For 2026 and later, the IRS treats a digital asset transferred into Venmo's custodial account as noncovered for Form 1099-DA. Venmo is not required to report that basis, and a blank field is not zero. Check your acquisition and transfer records.
How do I fix a wrong Venmo 1099-DA?
Email [email protected] with the form type, tax year, and requested change. Venmo's website edit path is for the current-year Form 1099-K, while its documented route for a 1099-DA is the email address.
