CoinJar has operated since 2013 and pushed into the US market across 2025 and 2026 17. This review works from a dated evidence snapshot, weighing what the documentation establishes against what it leaves open.

Who this exchange suits

CoinJar fits a narrow profile: a US resident in one of its served states who wants straightforward spot buying and selling, maybe the CoinJar Card, and who does not need futures, margin or an independently audited reserve report. If you live in New York, Alabama or Iowa, the platform is not an option today 12. The costs read competitive on paper, with a low taker fee on the Exchange order route, but no single all-in price is published, so the real number depends on how you trade 9. Custody sits with the operator, and its reserve language is a marketing claim rather than a verified attestation 15. Treat this as a conditional yes for simple spot use in a supported state, and a no if audited proof-of-reserves or phone support is your dealbreaker.

US access and New York restrictions

Two legal entities sit behind the brand. CoinJar, Inc. is the US operator, registered as a money services business with FinCEN and holding state money transmitter licenses in Illinois, Mississippi, Missouri and Oklahoma 2. CoinJar Pty Ltd is the Australian parent and app publisher 2. That registration lets the company operate; it is not a government endorsement of the service.

US access is partial. CoinJar splits states into a served set and a set where it is not yet available, and the unavailable group includes Alabama and Iowa alongside more than two dozen others 12.

New York is its own question. The state is not served, and CoinJar, Inc. does not appear in the NYDFS registry of licensed or chartered virtual currency businesses, meaning neither a BitLicense nor a limited purpose trust charter has been issued 120. A product the company offers globally, such as the card, does not automatically reach a given US state or account. Check your own state's status before you plan around any feature.

Trading fees and withdrawal costs

On the CoinJar Exchange, the maker fee runs at 0.00% and the taker base at 0.06% 9. Another review describes taker pricing on a volume-tiered range rather than a flat rate, so the figure you pay can shift with your trading volume 10. The two readings do not resolve into one published number, which is the first reason to avoid treating any quote as an all-in cost.

Simple buys work differently from the Exchange order book. The app's instant-buy flow and the pro Exchange are not priced the same way, so a one-tap purchase will not match the 0.06% taker line.

Network withdrawals carry their own charge. Pulling Bitcoin out costs about 0.000079 BTC, a fee tied to the Bitcoin network rather than to CoinJar's trading schedule 9. If you plan to move coins off the platform often, that line matters more than the headline trading fee.

No universal total exists in the evidence record. Deposit rails, fiat-pair pricing and any promotional rate are separate items, and the record does not roll them into one figure. The table keeps each documented cost tied to its route.

Documented item Dated value / scope Practical implication
CoinJar Exchange taker fee 0.06% base (checked 2026-09-25) 9 Applies to the Exchange order route, not a universal all-in price
BTC network withdrawal 0.000079 BTC (checked 2026-09-25) 9 Moves with the Bitcoin network; separate from trading fees
Derivatives Not offered, company level (checked 2026-09-25) 17 Spot buying and selling only, no futures or margin route
CoinJar Card Documented at company level (checked 2026-09-25) 17 A product flag is not proof every US state or account can use it
Cold storage In use (checked 2026-09-25) 15 A documented control, not a guarantee against loss
Bug bounty program In place (checked 2026-09-25) 15 A documented control, not a guarantee against loss

Security, reserves and incident history

CoinJar's security page documents cold storage and a bug bounty program 15. Both are real controls worth having. Neither one guarantees your funds are safe, and reading them as a guarantee would misstate what a control actually does.

The reserve picture is thinner than the marketing suggests. The company says it holds client assets on a 100% reserved basis using a mix of multi-signature and MPC technology plus cold storage, but there is no independent audit, Merkle-tree attestation or published proof-of-reserves report behind that claim 15. The reserve method on record is none, and the disclosure does not include liabilities 15. A reserve statement without liabilities tells you nothing about whether assets cover what the exchange owes customers, and none of this functions like FDIC-style deposit insurance. Your crypto on CoinJar is not protected the way bank cash is.

One incident is documented. In April 2025, an outage left part of CoinJar's customers temporarily unable to log into CoinJar Exchange 14. The source records the month but not the exact day, and neither the number of affected users nor any compensation is disclosed. A single dated outage is not evidence of an ongoing problem, and it should not be read as one. What it does show is that the service has had access disruptions, which is worth weighing if uninterrupted access matters to you.

Products, support and evidence limits

The documented product set centers on spot trading and recurring buys, plus the CoinJar Card issued with Mastercard 17. The US site references 60-plus supported cryptocurrencies 1. Derivatives are not offered, so there is no futures or margin path here 17.

Support is where the record looks weak. There is no phone line and no live chat; help runs through support forms and tickets 17. If fast human help during a problem is a priority, that gap is worth noting.

Some things the evidence record simply does not measure. It carries no tested execution quality, no verified withdrawal speed, no support response time, and no independent reserve attestation. Third-party review sites report complaints about account freezes and withdrawal delays, but those are aggregated user reports, not something this review verified 17. Read the limits as limits, not as a verdict either way.

How to decide whether it fits

Run through this before you commit:

  • Identity and geography: your state is served and you are not in New York, Alabama or Iowa 120.
  • Intended operation: you want spot or the card, not derivatives or margin 17.
  • Documented cost limit: you accept a 0.06% taker base plus a separate network withdrawal, with no single all-in figure published 9.
  • Custody and provider boundary: you understand the 100% reserve claim has no independent audit and no deposit insurance 15.
  • Next step: confirm current state eligibility on CoinJar's states page and, for New York, the NYDFS registry before funding 120.

CoinJar fits if you are in a served state, want simple spot exposure or the card, and can accept a reserve claim that carries no audit. It does not fit if you need New York access, derivatives, phone support, or independently verified proof-of-reserves.
