Uphold is a multi-asset platform that lets you trade crypto, fiat, and precious metals from a single account. Founded in 2015, it operates through five regulated legal entities across the US, UK, Portugal, and the Bahamas. The platform claims 10 million-plus users and serves roughly 140 countries, but availability is tightly restricted in the United States-and completely blocked in New York. This review walks through what the documented evidence shows about costs, access, security practices, and the incidents that should factor into your decision.
Who this exchange suits
Uphold works best for US residents outside the six excluded states who want a streamlined interface for spot trading between crypto, fiat, and metals-and who accept the trade-offs that come with the platform's regulatory history. The 0.25% base trading fee on stablecoins is competitive, but spreads widen significantly on altcoins and precious metals. You won't find advanced features like margin trading, futures, or an order book; Uphold is a simplified custodial venue, not a professional trading desk.
The platform is unsuitable if you live in California, Hawaii, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Montana, or Nebraska. It's completely unavailable in New York. If you need native support or rapid assistance with account verification, Uphold's ticket-based system and limited phone availability (California residents only, Pacific hours) may frustrate you. Recent settlement data also suggests you should be comfortable with the compliance overhead-account freezes during verification are a recurring complaint on Reddit and Trustpilot.
US access and New York restrictions
Uphold operates in the US as a Money Services Business registered with FinCEN and licensed as a money transmitter in most states under NMLS ID 1269875 12. However, the platform explicitly excludes six states: California, Hawaii, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Montana, and Nebraska 3. If you're in any of those states, you cannot use Uphold at all.
New York is a complete exclusion. Uphold is not available to New York residents, even though the company later settled with the New York Attorney General in April 2026 over misleading promotion of a third-party yield product 4. That settlement required Uphold to register as a broker with the state, but it did not restore service to New York users.
Uphold operates through separate legal entities for different regulatory regimes. Uphold HQ Inc. is the US-facing operator; Uphold Securities Inc. handles broker-dealer functions under FINRA and SEC registration. Distinct entities in the UK (FCA-regulated), Portugal (Bank of Portugal VASP authorization), and the Bahamas (Securities Commission digital asset business registration) serve other markets. This structure matters because it means US availability doesn't extend to other jurisdictions-and it explains why New York remains shut out even as the company holds state broker registration elsewhere.
Trading fees and withdrawal costs
Uphold embeds commissions in the spread rather than showing them as separate line items. The base fee for stablecoin and major currency pairs is 0.25% 567. Spreads widen for altcoins and precious metals, ranging from roughly 1.9% to 3.8% depending on the asset and when you check 8.
Beyond trading, you'll encounter withdrawal and deposit costs. Bank transfers above $2,000 are free; below that threshold, fees run up to $20. Credit or debit card deposits cost 3.99%. Fiat withdrawals to a card charge 1.75% with a $1 minimum. Bitcoin withdrawal fees are approximately 0.00004 BTC 3.
The platform states explicitly that it adds no hidden fees between the preview and confirmation screens-the price you see before trading is the price you pay 7. That claim is specific to the order flow and does not eliminate the embedded spreads described above.
| Item | Cost or scope | Implication |
|---|---|---|
| Stablecoin / major pair trading | 0.25% | Competitive on major pairs; spreads widen significantly on altcoins and metals. |
| Altcoin and precious metal trading | 1.9-3.8% depending on asset | Budget wider margin for less-liquid assets. |
| Bank deposit (under $2,000) | Up to $20 | Free ACH and wire transfers only for amounts ≥$2,000. |
| Card deposit | 3.99% | Expensive; use bank transfer if possible. |
| Fiat withdrawal to card | 1.75% (minimum $1) | Compound effect with trading spreads if you're converting in and out frequently. |
| Bitcoin withdrawal | ~0.00004 BTC | Network-based; competitive with most exchanges. |
Security, reserves and incident history
Uphold publishes reserve data in real time on its transparency page, claiming 100%+ positioning and verification every 30 seconds 9. However, the platform does not specify the method-no Merkle tree verification, zero-knowledge proof, or attestation by external auditor is named. The company states it is subject to regular US state audits, but the documentation doesn't detail what those audits cover or when they occurred 9.
The security infrastructure includes SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001 certifications, 2FA, passkeys, withdrawal address whitelisting, and a public bug bounty program 10. These are documented controls; their presence is not a guarantee against loss or unauthorized access.
Uphold's incident history includes two significant events. In July 2022, a third-party email vendor (Customer.io) was compromised, exposing email addresses and first and last names of some Uphold users 11. No funds, passwords, or two-factor authentication data were affected, and Uphold did not offer compensation. In March 2023, the US Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control settled with Uphold over 152 transactions totaling roughly $180,575 in apparent violations of sanctions on Iran, Cuba, and Venezuela spanning March 2017 through May 2022 12. Uphold paid $72,230.32 and characterized the breach as unintentional and voluntarily disclosed.
Most recently, in April 2026, the New York Attorney General settled with Uphold for $5 million over the platform's promotion of CredEarn, a third-party yield product that misrepresented risk and ultimately collapsed when the issuer (Cred) failed 4. Uphold agreed to register as a broker and strengthen its due diligence process for third-party products.
Products, support and evidence limits
Uphold's spot exchange supports roughly 250 tradeable assets in the US and 360+ globally, spanning crypto, fiat currencies, and precious metals (gold, silver, platinum, palladium) 3. The platform offers staking and earn-like rewards on proof-of-stake assets, though rates vary (Uphold takes 20-25% on boosted products and 50% on flexible staking). US staking resumed in March 2025 but excludes Washington State 8. Recurring purchases (dollar-cost averaging) are available. A debit card offering cashback in XRP exists but is not available in Louisiana, New York, or US territories 8.
Uphold does not offer margin trading, futures, an order book, or advanced charting. If you need those tools, you'll need a different exchange.
Customer support operates through a ticketed help system in the app and web portal, with a stated response time of up to 24 hours (often faster) 13. A phone line exists for California residents only, Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM Pacific Time 13. The app is available in two languages 14.
The supplied documentation does not measure execution quality during volatile markets, support responsiveness during stress periods, or the consistency of stated reserve practices over time. Trustpilot and Reddit contain numerous complaints about account freezes and verification delays, but those reports fall outside the scope of this review's source material.
How to decide whether it fits
Use this checklist to assess whether Uphold is a reasonable fit for your situation.
Before you sign up:
- Confirm you are not in California, Hawaii, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Montana, Nebraska, or New York. If you are, Uphold is not available to you.
- Verify you are comfortable with the compliance overhead. Account verification can be lengthy, and freezes during investigation are documented.
- Review the asset list. Does Uphold offer the coins or metals you want to trade? (Check the app or web interface; the platform supports 250+ US assets.)
Before you deposit:
- Calculate your cost. Factor in the trading spread (0.25% for stablecoins, higher for altcoins), any deposit fee (free for bank transfer ≥$2,000; 3.99% for card), and withdrawal costs.
- Decide on your custody model. Uphold holds your assets; you are not running your own wallet. That trade-off is clearer on Uphold than on some competitors, but it matters.
- Check support channels. Can you accept responses via ticket system only, with phone access limited to Pacific business hours in California?
Fit / Non-fit conclusion: Uphold fits if you are in an available US state, want simple spot trading and fiat on-ramps without margin or derivatives, and are willing to accept wider spreads on altcoins and metals. It does not fit if you need advanced trading tools, live in an excluded state, require 24/7 phone support, or are unwilling to tolerate compliance-related account reviews. For New York residents, there is no fit-the platform is simply unavailable.
Quick questions
Is Uphold available in New York? No. Uphold is not available to New York residents and does not serve the state. The April 2026 settlement with the New York Attorney General did not restore service to the state.
Do the stated charges cover every transaction? No. The 0.25% base fee applies to stablecoin and major currency pair trading. Spreads are wider for altcoins and precious metals (1.9-3.8%), and separate fees apply to deposits and withdrawals depending on the method. The platform does embed costs in the spread rather than adding separate trading commissions, but you're still paying-it's just built into the price you see before you confirm the trade.
Was a trade or withdrawal tested for this review? No. This is an editorial review of publicly documented information, regulatory filings, and third-party coverage. No deposits were made and no transactions were executed.
