PayPal says it sends Form 1099-DA by February 15 when you had a 2025 sale or exchange of cryptocurrency or PYUSD in a PayPal wallet.

The form covers proceeds from those wallet dispositions, not every payment or bonus that moved through PayPal.

Start with the 2025 exchange 1099-DA directory if you are comparing PayPal with another platform.

Does PayPal issue a 1099-DA for 2025?

Yes. PayPal says its 2025 Form 1099-DA covers sales or exchanges of cryptocurrency or PYUSD held in a PayPal wallet. Its stated delivery date is February 15 when a disposition occurred.

PayPal's cryptocurrency tax help page is the issuer's explanation of that policy.

A disposition is the activity that matters here. Simply holding crypto in PayPal, or receiving a different PayPal tax document, does not by itself identify a 1099-DA trigger. A PayPal 1099-K and a PayPal 1099-MISC relate to different activity categories.

The general Form 1099-DA phase-in is not the focus of this page. For a PayPal user, the practical question is narrower: did cryptocurrency or PYUSD leave the wallet through a sale or exchange, and does the form match the activity in the account records?

That distinction prevents a common bookkeeping mistake. A crypto sale, a payment for goods, and a bonus should not be placed into one 1099 bucket merely because all three passed through PayPal.

Where and when to find your PayPal form

PayPal's published 2025 account flow is:

  1. Sign in to PayPal.
  2. Open Settings, then Statements and Taxes.
  3. Select Tax Documents.
  4. Choose tax year 2025 and select Form 1099-DA to download it.

PayPal says it sends the form by February 15 when its records show a qualifying disposition. The IRS furnishing deadline for tax-year 2025 Form 1099-DA is February 17, 2026, as stated on the IRS Form 1099-DA page. Those are separate dates: PayPal's stated delivery date is its own policy, while February 17 is the federal furnishing deadline.

If the document is missing, treat that as an account-record question. Check the 2025 transaction history for sales or exchanges, confirm that you are viewing the correct PayPal account, and keep the account export with your tax records. The absence of a form does not by itself establish that no reportable activity occurred.

What the form reports, and what it leaves out

PayPal says the 2025 Form 1099-DA reports proceeds from cryptocurrency or PYUSD dispositions in a PayPal wallet. It is not a complete history of every acquisition, transfer, payment, or bonus connected with the account.

PayPal also describes a separate supplemental year-end Gain/Loss Statement. That statement includes cost basis when available and calculates available basis using HIFO. I would keep it beside the 1099-DA rather than treating it as a replacement for your own acquisition records.

The timing matters. PayPal's US help page describes the supplemental statement in connection with 2026 reporting and makes no promise that basis will appear on the 2026 Form 1099-DA itself. That 2026 statement is distinct from the tax-year 2025 form.

A transfer into PayPal can expose the gap.

PayPal supplies basis on the supplemental Gain/Loss Statement only when available, and its US help pages describe no specific method for importing or reconstructing acquisition basis for crypto transferred into PayPal.

If the original acquisition record is absent, mark that missing source instead of filling in a figure from memory. The guide on what a 1099-DA reports covers the broader form context.

What to check against your PayPal records

Put the downloaded form next to the PayPal transaction export. Compare the tax year, issuer, disposition dates, and proceeds. Then identify the acquisition source for each asset that was transferred into PayPal and mark whether basis is available.

Form-versus-record checklist

  • Choose tax year 2025.
  • Identify the PayPal form and issuer.
  • Compare disposition dates and proceeds with the exported transactions.
  • Mark the acquisition source for every transfer-in and note available basis.
  • Separate any bonus or goods-and-services payment from a crypto disposition.
  • Record the discrepancy and take the assembled file to PayPal's current tax-support route.

Here is a useful annotated example:

Record item What to compare What to mark
PayPal disposition The date and proceeds on the 1099-DA versus the matching PayPal transaction A missing or unmatched disposition
Transfer-in acquisition The wallet or account that originally supplied the asset, plus its acquisition record Whether PayPal has available basis
Bonus The payment description and the separate tax-form category Keep it outside the disposition comparison

Do not assume that the original acquisition cost will appear because the asset arrived through a transfer. I have seen how easily a receiving-account record gets mistaken for the full history of an asset. The source record still has to be found.

For a general method when basis is missing, see reconcile missing cost basis. PayPal's help pages identify the availability issue but do not describe a PayPal-specific transfer-in reconstruction process.

Other PayPal forms and who receives them

PayPal's three documented categories separate wallet dispositions from payments and bonuses. Receiving one form does not itself prove that you should also receive another.

Document PayPal activity 2025 condition Record to compare
Form 1099-DA Sales or exchanges of cryptocurrency or PYUSD in a PayPal wallet PayPal says it sends the form by February 15 when a disposition occurred Wallet transaction history, disposition dates, and proceeds
Form 1099-K Crypto payments received for goods or services More than $20,000 and more than 200 transactions for the 2025 federal threshold (IRS Form 1099-K guidance); Vermont, Massachusetts, Virginia, Maryland, and Illinois have lower state thresholds Payment records and goods-or-services transaction history
Form 1099-MISC Crypto bonuses, prizes, or awards $600 or more for the 2025 tax year Bonus, prize, or award record

The state list above does not supply the state-specific amounts. Keep the federal condition separate from the lower state thresholds.

Corrections and PayPal support

The reviewed PayPal material does not provide a PayPal-specific correction procedure for a mismatched 1099-DA. Before contacting support, assemble the 2025 transaction export, the received form, the relevant transaction dates, and a short note showing the exact discrepancy.

Use the current PayPal tax-support route linked from its help center. Describe whether the issue is a missing form, an unmatched disposition, proceeds that do not match the account record, or unavailable transfer-in basis. Do not assume that submitting a question guarantees a particular correction outcome.

What this means for your filing

PayPal clearly discloses three form categories, but any one form remains an incomplete record of your full activity. Reconcile the 1099-DA with dispositions, keep payments and bonuses in their own categories, and investigate a missing acquisition record before relying on a basis figure.

If the form and export disagree, save the comparison and contact PayPal support through its current tax-support route. For the general steps after reconciliation, use report reconciled sales on Form 8949.

The decisive federal 1099-K threshold for the 2025 tax year is more than $20,000 and more than 200 transactions (IRS Form 1099-K guidance).

State thresholds can differ. The form tells you what PayPal reported; your source records still determine what activity needs to be addressed on your return.

Questions about PayPal's forms

Why did I get a PayPal 1099-K but no 1099-DA?

The documents have different activity triggers. Use the three-form table above, then compare the 1099-K with your payment records and check the PayPal account for 2025 dispositions.

Does my Venmo crypto sale appear on my PayPal 1099-DA?

No. The Venmo wallet has its own separate form, as described on Venmo's cryptocurrency tax page. PayPal's 1099-DA covers dispositions in the PayPal wallet.

Who holds PYUSD if I traded it in PayPal?

Paxos Trust Company, N.A. issues and custodies PYUSD. PayPal's wallet-disposition reporting statement is separate from that issuer and custodian relationship.

I only bought and held crypto in PayPal. Should I expect a 1099-DA?

PayPal's documented trigger is a disposition, such as a sale or exchange. Check the 2025 account activity for a disposition, but do not treat the presence or absence of a form as a conclusion about your entire return.

The 2025 exchange 1099-DA directory lets you compare PayPal's issuer answer with other platforms. Venmo's separate 1099-DA covers the separate Venmo wallet relationship. Cash App's bitcoin form-name question addresses a different payment-app document problem.

For the form itself, read what a 1099-DA reports.

If basis is missing, use reconcile missing cost basis, then follow report reconciled sales on Form 8949 for the general filing steps.

Download the 2025 PayPal document and transaction history, run the checklist, and save the discrepancy record before using the filing guide or contacting PayPal support.
