BitBox is a hardware wallet built by Shift Crypto AG in Switzerland, and this review works from one dated evidence evidence record rather than a device on a desk. The flagship model covered here is the BitBox02 Nova. What follows is what the documents establish about cost, US access, signing and recovery, plus the parts they leave open.

Who this hardware wallet suits

The Nova is the model this review covers, recorded as the flagship in the BitBox lineup as of September 26, 2026 3. Its central trade-off is the one that matters most in hardware custody: you approve every transaction on the device screen, and you alone hold the way back in.

Approval happens on the hardware, with addresses and amounts shown for confirmation before signing 13. Recovery runs on a BIP-39 seed, the standard word-list backup, which means no support ticket restores access if the words are gone. Shift Crypto AG states it holds no customer keys and provides no custodial service 1.

That suits a holder of Bitcoin and a few EVM chains who wants self-custody and is willing to own the backup. It suits a Solana or XRP holder poorly.

Device model, cost and availability

Pricing in this evidence record comes from third-party reporting, not the manufacturer's checkout page. The Bitcoin Hole's review, checked September 26, 2026, lists $162.45 to $201 across the BitBox02 variants, Multi and Nova 7. The official store figure for the Nova is not part of this snapshot, so treat that band as a planning range and read the price on bitbox.swiss before you order. Shipping and any sales tax collected at checkout sit outside those numbers, and this review does not estimate a landed total.

US availability is recorded as yes as of September 26, 2026, with no excluded states on the list 7. That empty list is the state of the record rather than a verified state-by-state shipping check.

New York sits in the evidence record as its own entry, in scope, with no license basis attached. A hardware device purchase is not money transmission or custody, and the company states it provides no financial or custodial services 17. No BitLicense question arises here, and the absence of a licensing requirement is not supervision or approval by any regulator.

Behind the product is Shift Crypto AG, a Zurich canton entity (CH-ZH) recorded on September 26, 2026 as manufacturer and global operator, based in Adliswil and active since 2015 12.

Signing, connectivity and compatibility

Nine networks are supported natively, per the supported-coins documentation checked September 26, 2026: Bitcoin, Litecoin, Cardano, Ethereum, Polygon, BNB Smart Chain, Arbitrum, Optimism and Fantom Opera, with more than 1,500 ERC-20 tokens handled through BitBoxApp and third-party integrations such as MyEtherWallet, Rabby and NuFi 8. Solana and XRP are not on the list 8. For a US reader holding a mixed portfolio, that gap is usually the deciding fact, not the chip or the price.

Multisig is documented, including PSBT workflows and xpub verification in multisig setups 13. Connectivity is USB-C and Bluetooth; there is no NFC and no QR channel, so an air-gapped camera workflow is not part of this device 3. On iPhone and iPad the connection runs over Bluetooth, because iOS does not permit the USB path 3. Desktop and mobile coverage spans Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iPadOS 3.

Documented item Dated value and scope What it means for you
Flagship model BitBox02 Nova, recorded 2026-09-26 3 This review covers the Nova, not the Multi or the Bitcoin-only edition
Networks supported natively 9, recorded 2026-09-26 8 Bitcoin plus eight others, with Solana and XRP absent
On-device confirmation Documented, recorded 2026-09-26 13 Address and amount are verified on the device screen before signing
Connectivity USB-C yes, Bluetooth yes, NFC no, QR no, recorded 2026-09-26 3 iPhone and iPad use Bluetooth; no QR-based air-gapped signing
Seed and recovery model BIP-39, recorded 2026-09-26 13 Your backup words are the only recovery path, portable to other BIP-39 wallets
US availability Yes, no excluded states listed, recorded 2026-09-26 7 Buying from the US is documented; state-level shipping was not separately checked

Recovery model and security history

A BIP-39 seed cuts both ways. The words restore your funds on other BIP-39 compatible wallets if the device breaks or is lost, and they also hand over everything to whoever reads them. There is no provider-side reset, because the company holds no keys 1. Any assessment of recovery therefore belongs to your backup plan, not to the manufacturer's feature list.

On the hardware side, the evidence record records a dual-chip design pairing a secure chip the manufacturer describes as EAL6+ certified with fully open firmware and app code, built reproducibly 313. An external firmware audit was carried out by Census Labs, and a bug bounty program is in place 13. Transparency entries are both recorded as yes on September 26, 2026: a named legal entity is disclosed, and a security audit is published 113. An audit covers the scope and version its authors examined. It is not a verdict on the unit in your hands, and this review includes no hands-on security testing.

Two dated events sit in the record. On November 26, 2018, independent researcher Saleem Rashid disclosed vulnerabilities in the first-generation Digital BitBox involving password change through recovery of encrypted keys; customer impact is recorded as none, the company paid a bug bounty and shipped a fix, and disclosure is closed 15. On July 26, 2025, the Everest ransomware group claimed internal documents and customer order and contact data; the company and a breach tracker record private keys and funds as unaffected, with no compensation recorded 16. Exposed order data raises the odds of a convincing phishing attempt, and the company warns separately that look-alike apps using the BitBoxApp name circulate; the official app is published under Shift Crypto AG only 6.

What remains outside this review

No setup was performed, no device was handled, and no recovery drill was run. Durability, build feel and support responsiveness are not in this evidence record.

Four other gaps are worth naming. The manufacturer's own price for the Nova is absent, which is why the figures above come from third-party reporting and span a wide band. State-level shipping limits were not separately checked, so the empty excluded-states list is a default entry. Aggregated user ratings from app stores or review platforms were not collected. Sanctions and enforcement fields carry no findings, and that reflects nothing surfacing in the documents reviewed rather than a dedicated register search; it is neither a clean bill nor a problem.

Where a field is empty here, read it as a limit of this dataset. A feature can exist and still be missing from the record.

How to choose for your custody needs

Fit here is conditional, and the condition is your coin list. If Bitcoin and EVM chains cover what you hold, the documented signing and multisig support line up with ordinary self-custody. If an air-gapped QR workflow is a requirement, this device does not offer one 3. If you plan to run the wallet mainly from an iPhone, accept that Bluetooth is the only route 3.

Work through this before you spend anything:

  • Identity and geography. Buy from Shift Crypto AG channels, bitbox.swiss or the Amazon US listing 7. A similarly named product, store or app is not this company.
  • Intended operation. Write out every asset you hold. Solana and XRP are not supported, and no firmware update in this record changes that 8.
  • Documented cost limit. Plan against the $162.45 to $201 band recorded for the BitBox02 variants 7, then confirm the live Nova price at checkout. Shipping and sales tax are on top.
  • Custody boundary. The product is non-custodial, and the BIP-39 words are the only recovery path 1. No one can reset them for you.
  • Next step. Decide where two separate copies of the seed will live before the box arrives, and keep the order confirmation email in mind as a phishing target after the 2025 data exposure 16.

Quick questions
