CoinReckon's wallet coverage splits into two groups that share a name but not a risk profile. This page explains what sits in each group, how we read the individual reviews, and how a US reader can narrow the field. Everything here is built from a saved research base snapshotted on 2026-10-20 under methodology version 1.3. The publication date is not a re-verification date, so treat prices, firmware behavior, and supported-coin lists as starting points to confirm on the vendor's own site.
What we rate, and what we only profile
Eight hardware wallets carry a full rated review: BitBox, Coldcard, Keystone, Ledger, OneKey, SafePal, Tangem, and Trezor. These are dedicated self-custody devices, and because they compete on comparable terms we apply the same hardware criteria to each. The comparison table shows their scores and evidence coverage.
Software wallets sit in a separate class and are published as profiles without a score. The current set is MetaMask, Phantom, Trust Wallet, and Exodus. A browser extension or phone app that holds keys on an internet-connected device is not doing the same job as an offline signer, so ranking the two together would mislead. There is no cross-class winner here. If you want the deeper read, the MetaMask Wallet Profile: US Access and Key Risks lays out how we frame the software side.
How to read a wallet review
Every rated entry follows one frame, visible in its title: Costs, Access and Key Trade-offs.
Cost comes first and means the full cost of ownership, not the sticker price alone. A cheaper device that forces a companion purchase or a paid recovery service can cost more over its life. Access covers supported assets, companion software, and where the product actually ships. Trade-offs name what you give up for each design choice, such as an open versus closed secure element, or air-gapped signing versus a USB connection.
Read the source beside a claim: a manufacturer describes its own product, while an independent report or audit has its own scope. Each fact keeps its evidence date. Missing details remain open rather than becoming a positive finding. The methodology explains how these evidence limits affect the rating.
How to choose a hardware wallet
Work through these before you buy. The order matters: answer the earlier ones first.
- Confirm the assets you hold are supported today, including any you plan to add. Chain support changes with firmware.
- Decide whether you want air-gapped signing (QR or microSD) or are fine with USB. Consider how that signing method fits your transactions.
- Check the recovery model. Know how the seed is backed up and whether any step pushes you toward a paid or cloud service.
- Total the real cost: device, any required accessories, and shipping to your state.
- Verify the purchase channel. Buy direct from the maker or an authorized reseller, never a used unit or a third-party marketplace listing.
- Match the device to your amount at risk. A larger balance justifies stricter, less convenient handling.
For a transparent-firmware comparison, the Coldcard Review: Costs, Access and Key Trade-offs and the Trezor Review: Costs, Access and Key Trade-offs sit at different points on that convenience-versus-control line.
Availability in the United States
The site renders three selectable tables, US, US-NY, and GLOBAL, from the supplied eligibility data. All eight hardware wallets are eligible across those views. GLOBAL never means a product is available everywhere; it marks worldwide-oriented listings, nothing more. US-excluded-state rules are set by each state and are not reflected row by row, so confirm shipping and service to your own state before ordering.
Software wallet profiles are not placed in the hardware ranking and carry no eligibility score. If you reached wallets while comparing where to buy or trade, our exchange reviews and on-ramp coverage handle the funding side, and the scam database and warnings track entities flagged by authorities.
Taxes and keeping records
Holding keys yourself does not change your tax reporting. Moving or spending crypto can be a taxable event, and clean records make filing easier. Our tax section covers the general picture, with separate pages for exchange forms, software, and calculators. This is general information, not personal financial or tax advice; confirm your situation with a qualified professional.
CoinReckon publishes editorial research for general information only. Nothing here is personal financial, investment, or tax advice. Data reflects a saved snapshot dated 2026-10-20 and may be out of date; verify current details with the vendor before acting.
