GLOBAL is an international evidence profile. Local restrictions and product eligibility still apply; it does not establish worldwide permission.
Ledger turns up in two separate conversations: hardware wallets people trust with long-term holdings, and customer data leaks at the company's shipping and marketing partners. Both belong in a buying decision. This review works from one imported evidence snapshot covering the flagship Ledger Nano Gen5, its documented price, its US access, and the parts of the record that stay open.
Who this hardware wallet suits
The flagship model in this record is the Ledger Nano Gen5 at $179 8. Clear signing is documented as supported: the receiving address, the asset and the amount appear on the device's own screen before you approve a transaction 8. That matters most if you sign in third-party apps rather than only moving coins between two accounts you already control.
The trade-off sits inside the same device. Ledger OS and the Secure Element firmware are closed, with only the SDK and the on-device apps published 10. If your personal rule is that anyone should be able to audit the firmware, this is the wrong purchase and the decision is not a close one.
Recovery stays with you. The documented seed model is BIP-39, 12 to 24 words, written down by you and restorable only by you unless you choose a backup service.
Device model, cost and availability
$179 buys the device. Shipping and state sales tax sit on top, and this record does not total them for any state, so treat the figure as the floor of what lands on your card rather than the checkout total.
Ledger was founded in 2014 and is headquartered in France 3. US availability is recorded as yes with no excluded states as of the September 26, 2026 check 28. The company's own blog describes a partnership with a Tennessee-based distribution and logistics operation set up to speed shipping into the US and Canada 28.
New York gets evaluated on its own here, because US-wide access never automatically carries a state through. The record lists US-NY as available with no special basis attached, and the company profile mentions a New York office 328. Nothing in this evidence record shows a state-level restriction on buying the hardware.
On sanctions screening, no OFAC or EU designation for Ledger appears as of the September 26, 2026 check, measured against the European Commission's consolidated financial sanctions file generated September 22, 2026 30. Absence from a sampled list is not a regulator's approval of anything, and it says nothing about the device itself.
Signing, connectivity and compatibility
Three ways in: USB-C, Bluetooth 5.2 and NFC. Bluetooth is documented as supported, which is what makes phone use practical, and it is also one more wireless surface on a device holding your keys 8. QR-based air-gapped signing is not part of this model's documented connection set, so if you specifically want a camera-only workflow, look elsewhere in the category.
The screen is a 2.8-inch monochrome E Ink touchscreen 8. That screen is the point of clear signing: a transaction you cannot read on the device is a transaction you are approving on trust.
iOS support is recorded as yes, carried by the Bluetooth link to Ledger Live. The evidence record does not contain a Gen5-specific iPhone statement, so read that as an inference from the Bluetooth models in the same line rather than a quoted company claim.
Network coverage is the thinnest part of the compatibility picture. Ledger's own support documentation lists supported devices and blockchain networks, but this record holds no official aggregated count of networks 16. If a specific chain decides your purchase, check that support page for your chain by name before ordering.
| Documented item | Value and scope (dated) | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Flagship model and price | Ledger Nano Gen5, $179, device record checked September 26, 2026 8 | Device cost only; shipping and sales tax are not totaled in this record |
| US availability | Yes, no excluded states, checked September 26, 2026 28 | Orders ship nationwide; shipping access is not a license or an endorsement |
| New York scope | US-NY recorded as available, no special basis, checked September 26, 2026 328 | Assessed separately from US-wide access, not inherited from it |
| Clear signing | Supported, device record checked September 26, 2026 8 | Verify address, asset and amount on the device screen, every time |
| Bluetooth | Supported (5.2), device record checked September 26, 2026 8 | Mobile signing works; a wireless radio is also extra attack surface |
| 2020 customer data leak | Compensation: none, dump published December 2020 21 | No payout program is recorded; phishing exposure is the residual risk |
Recovery model and security history
Your 12 to 24 word BIP-39 phrase is the whole recovery story for this device unless you add something on top. The Gen5 ships with a Ledger Recovery Key for optional PIN-protected backup 8. Ledger Recover, the encrypted seed backup tied to identity verification, remains the company's most argued-over feature, and third-party reporting treats that argument as unresolved in the community rather than settled 18. Nobody is forced into it, and opting in changes who could, in principle, be compelled to act on a copy of your secret.
Transparency has two documented pieces: a named legal entity behind the business and published third-party security assessment reports 13. Those reports cover what their scope says they cover. An audit of a secure operating system is not a guarantee about your transactions, your phone, or the app you connect to.
Three incidents are on the record, and none of them is a break of the device's Secure Element.
December 2020: a leak through e-commerce and marketing systems involving a Shopify partner exposed email addresses for more than 1 million customers, plus names, phone numbers and physical addresses for hundreds of thousands. The full consolidated dump was published publicly that December. Private keys and seed phrases were not affected, and compensation was none 21. The lasting damage was a public list of people known to hold crypto, which is why Ledger-branded phishing is still a live problem years later.
December 2023: a supply-chain compromise of the Ledger Connect Kit library, used by many DeFi front ends. Users of third-party apps signed malicious transactions and lost funds. Third-party reporting put the total around $500,000, an estimate from reporters rather than an official Ledger figure 18.
January 5, 2026: customer data leaked through Global-e, a third-party international order partner, covering name, mailing address, email, phone and order details. The number of people affected was not disclosed, and funds, private keys and seed phrases were not involved 21.
What remains outside this review
No setup, durability or recovery test sits behind this page. Nobody here restored a wallet from a seed phrase on this device, dropped it, or ran its battery down, so treat the physical and procedural experience as unmeasured.
Support response times, interface languages and Ledger Live app store ratings are not in this record. Neither is any Trustpilot or forum complaint sampling.
Two scope limits deserve emphasis. The global profile is recorded with an empty restricted-country list, and an empty list in a dataset is not a promise that every country ships. Multisig signing is documented for the newest generation of devices, but this evidence record does not pin down Gen5 by name within that generation.
An empty field means this snapshot does not carry the answer, not that the feature is missing. Our field definitions live in how CoinReckon assesses services.
How to choose for your custody needs
Run these five checks before you order. Each one either clears or stops the purchase.
- Identity and geography. You are buying from a French company founded in 2014, shipping into the US with no excluded states on the September 26, 2026 record 328. New York readers: your eligibility was checked separately, not assumed.
- Intended operation. If you sign in third-party apps, clear signing on the device screen is the feature you are paying for. If you only hold and never sign, you are paying for less.
- Documented cost limit. Budget above $179: the record covers the device price, not shipping or your state's sales tax.
- Custody and provider boundary. The BIP-39 phrase is yours alone. No Ledger support ticket recovers it, and the December 2020 leak carried compensation of none, so assume the company's remedy for a data problem is a notice, not a payment.
- Next step consistent with the evidence. Confirm your chain and your phone on Ledger's supported devices and networks page 16, then compare against a related service profile if open firmware or QR signing matters to you.
Quick questions
Which Ledger model does this review cover? The Ledger Nano Gen5, the flagship in this record at $179 8. Other models in the line are priced and specified differently and are not assessed here.
What recovery and connection options are documented? A BIP-39 seed phrase of 12 to 24 words, with an included Recovery Key for optional PIN-protected backup, plus USB-C, Bluetooth 5.2 and NFC 8.
Was a recovery test performed for this review? No. The assessment rests on documentary evidence only, with no hands-on setup, restore or durability trial behind it.
Your next step
Check your specific chain and phone against Ledger's own support documentation before ordering, and price the device at $179 plus shipping and your state's tax rather than at the headline number. From there, browse the category hub for other hardware options, or read all crypto service reviews for the wider picture. Found something dated or wrong on this page? Send an editorial correction.
