Tangem sells cold storage shaped like a payment card. The company dates to 2017 and gives Switzerland as its home base 3, and the model covered here is the Tangem Wallet 3-card set, listed at $69.90 in the record we hold 7. What follows is built from company documentation, independent comparisons and published security research, not from a device on a desk. Where the record is silent, I say so instead of filling the gap with a guess.

Who this hardware wallet suits

The three-card set is the configuration Tangem treats as its standard tier, and it is the one independent comparisons reach for when they line the product up against Ledger or Trezor 7. One private key is generated inside the card's secure element and cloned to the other two cards over an encrypted short-range NFC link. No mnemonic gets written down. Nothing on paper can be photographed or found in a drawer during a move.

The flip side is blunt. Lose every card in the set and access is gone permanently, for you and for Tangem.

So the fit is narrow but genuine: a buyer who wants long-term storage driven from a phone, can store cards in separate physical locations, and does not need on-device transaction verification or multisig, which the Help Center does not cover anywhere in its topic index 31.

Device model, cost and availability

$69.90 for the three-card set, as recorded on 2026-09-26 7. Two-card and ring bundles sit on either side of it. Shipping and sales tax are not in this record, so read $69.90 as the device line rather than a checkout total.

US availability is recorded as available as of 2026-09-26, with no list of excluded states in the evidence record 711. That empty list deserves a careful reading. It means the snapshot turned up no state carve-outs, which is not the same thing as a vendor commitment covering all fifty states. New York carries its own entry and reads the same way, with the basis for that status recorded as none. No New York authorization sits underneath it. Tangem does not hold or move customer funds, so the licensing question that governs a BitLicense or a money transmitter registration does not attach to the hardware itself. Treat buying a card and using a service inside the app as two different eligibility questions.

Sanctions screening in this snapshot returned no designation for the brand under EU or US OFAC programs as of 2026-09-26, read from the EU consolidated financial sanctions file generated 22 September 2026 and the UK Sanctions List reported 21 September 2026 2930. Absence from a sampled list is not approval by any regulator.

Signing, connectivity and compatibility

Connectivity is NFC and only NFC. No USB-C, no Bluetooth, no QR-based signing, which both the independent comparison and Tangem's own cold-wallet material confirm 79. Your phone is the reader, the interface and the signing prompt.

There is no screen on the card, and that shapes the whole security model. Tangem's own comparison states it directly, describing a built-in screen as not needed because transaction details are verified in the Tangem app, and listing on-device verification as the one plain advantage competing devices hold 9. That is why clear signing is recorded as absent here. The transaction you approve is rendered by the same phone that could be compromised, so the card confirms a key is present without independently showing you what it is authorizing.

Chain coverage stands at 97 networks in the Help Center as of 2026-09-26 17. Older company and third-party articles still quote 80-plus and 87-plus, so if a comparison page gives you a different number, check its date before treating it as a correction. The app is published in the US Apple App Store, so iOS users are covered 11.

Documented item Value and scope (dated) Practical implication
Flagship model and price Tangem Wallet, 3-card set, $69.90 (2026-09-26) Device cost only; shipping and tax are not in this record
Connectivity NFC only; no USB-C, Bluetooth or QR (2026-09-26) A compatible phone is required for every signing action
On-device display No screen; details verified in the app (2026-09-26) Clear signing absent, so phone compromise is the live risk
Chain support 97 networks per Help Center (2026-09-26) Check your specific chain before buying; the count moves
Recovery design Seedless key cloned across cards; no multisig topic documented (2026-09-26) Backup is physical card storage, not a phrase or an M-of-N scheme
US access Available, no excluded states recorded (2026-09-26) No state carve-out found; not a vendor guarantee of all states

Recovery model and security history

Recovery runs on duplication, not on a phrase. The key is created on a Common Criteria certified secure element and copied to the companion cards, with an optional BIP-39 seed available as a secondary path rather than the default 79. Card firmware is closed and not remotely updatable, which removes malicious-update attacks and also means a hardware flaw found later cannot be patched out. The mobile app and SDK are published openly, so the open-source status is partial rather than full 9.

Independent audits are published and downloadable: Kudelski Security on the smartcard code in 2018, Riscure on the wallet and firmware in 2023, and Cure53 on the iOS and Android app in March 2026, none reporting critical findings 1. An audit covers a scope and a date, not the product forever. No named legal entity appears anywhere in this record as the holder of the Tangem brand, which is a transparency gap worth weighing next to those audit reports.

Ledger's research lab has disclosed two dated issues. A brute-force attack on the card authentication protocol was disclosed on 2025-06-12, with customer impact recorded as none reported and no compensation applicable, since nothing was lost 21. A laser fault injection attack was disclosed on 2026-02-10 and published that July; it needs physical possession of a card, affects cards already in circulation, cannot be patched, and ran on a research rig the lab valued around $250,000. Tangem's response called the risk to everyday users virtually non-existent 23. Both are past disclosures, not open breaches.

What remains outside this review

No setup, cloning, durability or recovery procedure was performed for this article, and nothing here should be read as proof that losing two of three cards leaves you recoverable in practice. A few things the snapshot itself does not settle: the secure element part number differs across sources, the headquarters city is given as Zug in one profile and Lucerne in another with only the country consistent, and no App Store or Google Play numeric ratings appear in the evidence record. The restricted-shipping country list is likewise not in the record, only a general worldwide shipping statement.

An empty field here means this dataset lacks it, not that the feature is missing from the product. Our scope rules are set out in how CoinReckon assesses services.

How to choose for your custody needs

Tangem makes sense if your threat model is theft of a written phrase and your use is occasional, phone-driven access to long-held coins. It makes less sense if you sign frequently with unfamiliar contracts, where the lack of an independent screen puts every approval on your handset.

Work through these five before you pay:

  1. Identity and geography. You are buying hardware from a Swiss-based maker founded in 2017, with no named legal entity in this record. US access is documented, New York included, with no excluded-state list.
  2. Intended operation. Cold storage and infrequent signing fit the design. Heavy dApp use does not, because transaction details are confirmed in the app.
  3. Cost and coverage limit. Budget $69.90 for the three-card set plus shipping and tax, and verify your chain against the 97 networks documented.
  4. Custody boundary. The keys are yours alone. Nobody, Tangem included, can restore access if all cards are lost, and no compensation mechanism exists for that outcome.
  5. Next step. Decide where the second and third cards will physically live before ordering. If you cannot name two separate locations, the backup model is not working for you.

Quick questions

Which Tangem model does this review cover? The Tangem Wallet three-card set at $69.90, the standard-tier configuration. Other bundles exist at different prices, and the two-card entry price is inconsistent between sources in this record.

What recovery and connection options are documented? Seedless recovery by cloning one key across two or three cards, with an optional BIP-39 seed as a secondary path, and NFC as the only connection method. No screen, no multisig documented.

Was a recovery test performed for this review? No. The assessment rests on documents, audits and dated disclosures, so nothing here verifies recovery behavior on a physical card.
