eToro turns up on a lot of US crypto shortlists, usually for the social trading and the single-app pitch. The record behind it is more specific than that. What follows reads eToro's documented US scope, costs and limits from a dated evidence snapshot, then gives a conditional read on who it actually fits.
Who this crypto broker suits
eToro operates as a multi-asset broker listed on Nasdaq under ETOR, pairing stocks, ETFs and options with crypto and its CopyTrader social feature. The crypto side is the part worth scrutiny for a US reader, because it carries the heaviest restrictions of anything on the platform.
After a 2024 settlement with the SEC, US customers can trade only three coins: Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash and Ethereum 78. That one fact settles most of the fit question. If you want a small set of major assets sitting next to a stock portfolio in one app, eToro earns a look. If your plan runs toward a wide coin menu, cheap trading, or moving most holdings into self-custody, the documented limits will get in your way fast. New York runs on a separate list and a separate legal entity, which I cover next.
US access, operator and custody
Three US entities do different jobs, and treating them as one is the easy mistake. eToro USA LLC, registered in New Jersey (US-NJ), runs crypto trading for customers outside New York 12. eToro NY LLC runs crypto for New York residents under a BitLicense and money transmitter license issued 2023-02-21, with trading opened to New Yorkers on 2026-04-01 34. A third entity, eToro USA Securities Inc., is the FINRA and SIPC member broker-dealer for stocks and options, and it does not offer crypto 19.
The registered address on file is Hoboken, NJ, the address of eToro USA LLC; the evidence record does not name a global group headquarters 12. eToro is registered with the SEC and FINRA through that securities arm 19, and it discloses that crypto holdings carry no FDIC or SIPC protection 19. Crypto trading is unavailable in Hawaii, Nevada, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands 16. Registration with a regulator is not the same thing as an endorsement of the crypto service.
Crypto costs and transfer limits
The documented pricing is easy to state and easy to underestimate. eToro charges a flat 1% commission on crypto, applied on both the buy and the sell, so a full round trip lands close to 2% 1210. One fee breakdown reports a lower 0.6% to 1% on the exit side; the figure recorded here is the 1% that most independent reviews describe on each leg 1512.
Moving crypto off the platform is a separate charge. A transfer from the trading account to the eToro Money wallet costs 2% of the amount, with a $1 minimum and a $100 cap per transfer, and it works only for positions backed by real crypto rather than CFD or copied holdings 1617. Cashing out fiat runs $5 on USD accounts and is free on GBP and EUR accounts 1210. An inactivity fee of $10 a month starts after twelve months without a login 1510.
| Documented item | Dated value / scope | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Crypto commission | 1% per side, buy and sell (checked 2026-09-25) | Round trip near 2% |
| External wallet transfer | 2% of amount, $1 min / $100 max | Real-crypto positions only |
| US tradable coins | 3 (BTC, BCH, ETH) after the 2024 SEC settlement | Far narrower than the global menu |
| Global coin count | 125 (checked 2026-09-25) | Does not apply to US or New York |
| SEC penalty | $1.5M, settled 2024-09-12 | Cost of the unregistered-broker finding |
| Excluded US states | HI, NV, PR, VI (checked 2026-09-25) | No crypto access in these |
Read the table by route, not as one headline rate. There is no single all-in number covering a trade, a transfer and a withdrawal together. Each leg bills on its own.
What account protections cover
Protection coverage splits by what you actually hold. The securities broker-dealer, eToro USA Securities Inc., is a member of FINRA and SIPC, so cash and securities inside that account fall under SIPC customer protection 19. Crypto sits apart. eToro discloses that crypto assets are not covered by FDIC or SIPC insurance 19, which means a custody failure or an insolvency would not pull coins under either backstop.
The enforcement history is the load-bearing fact here. On 2024-09-12 the SEC issued a cease-and-desist against eToro for operating as an unregistered broker and an unregistered clearing agency in its crypto trading, and eToro settled by paying a $1.5 million penalty 7811. The same settlement forced the US crypto list down to Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash and Ethereum, giving customers 180 days to sell other positions 78. This was a settled enforcement action, not an open allegation and not a shutdown.
What that leaves you with is a clean line. A regulated securities arm with SIPC coverage sits on one side; a crypto service with disclosed no-FDIC, no-SIPC status plus a recent regulatory penalty sits on the other. The snapshot does not include proof-of-reserves, audit or cold-storage detail, so custody practices stay outside what this evidence can describe.
Products and practical limitations
eToro documents crypto staking as an available product, extended with assets such as NEAR Protocol and Polygon 2125. It also documents a recurring-buy feature at the company level, reported for the UK, Europe and the UAE; the snapshot does not place that feature inside the US crypto profile 20. Read it as a company-level flag, not a settled US-account feature. A product listed for the group is not proof that every state or account can use it.
Coin counts move with geography, and that is exactly where expectations slip. The global catalog lists 125 cryptoassets 10, while US customers trade three and New York residents get a separate greenlisted set of roughly twenty coins 510. Do not read the global figure as a US number. External wallet withdrawal exists, but it applies only to real-crypto positions, not CFDs or copied portfolios 1617.
How to choose for your intended use
Match your actual plan against the documented limits before you open anything. This checklist walks the decision in the order that matters for a US reader.
- Identity and geography: Confirm which entity serves you - eToro USA LLC outside New York, eToro NY LLC in New York - and that your state is not Hawaii, Nevada, Puerto Rico or the US Virgin Islands 16.
- Intended operation: If you want anything beyond Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash or Ethereum as a US customer, the three-coin list rules eToro out for that goal 710.
- Cost limit: Budget 1% per trade side and 2% to move crypto to the wallet; there is no bundled rate 1216.
- Custody boundary: External transfers cover only real-crypto positions, and crypto carries no FDIC or SIPC coverage 117.
- Next step: If the limits fit, compare the documented costs against your intended coins and routes before funding. If they do not, a broader catalog belongs elsewhere.
Quick questions
Is eToro available in New York? Yes, through eToro NY LLC under a New York BitLicense, with crypto trading opened to New Yorkers on 2026-04-01 34. New York uses a separate greenlisted set of about twenty coins, distinct from the three-coin US list 5.
Do the stated charges cover every transaction? No. Each route carries its own cost - roughly 1% per trade side, 2% to move crypto to the wallet, and a $5 fiat withdrawal on USD accounts - with no single all-in rate 1216.
Was a trade or withdrawal tested for this review? No. This is an editorial review of supplied documentation and dated sources, not a hands-on test of execution or withdrawals.
If this record fits your plan, line up your intended coins and routes against the costs above, then see eToro tax forms and records for how activity gets reported. For broader comparisons, start at the category hub or browse all crypto service reviews; a related service profile is worth a look alongside it. Our approach is laid out in how CoinReckon assesses services, and if something here looks off, send an editorial correction.
