Fidelity Crypto lets you buy, hold, and withdraw Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Solana, and Fidelity's own stablecoin (FIDD) directly from your Fidelity brokerage account - no separate app required. The service is available to US residents, including New York, and operates under a national trust bank charter issued by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) as of December 12, 2025 12. This review examines what the documented service covers, what costs apply, which protections do and don't extend to your crypto holdings, and whether it fits your intended use.
Who this crypto broker suits
Fidelity Crypto works best for investors who already use Fidelity for stocks and ETFs and want a minimal-friction entry point to crypto - one login, one account view, one withdrawal route. The 1% trading spread is straightforward compared to the confusing fee structures at some exchanges, and there's no account opening fee or monthly custody charge 34. You can fund trades from your existing Fidelity cash or linked bank account without the friction of separate on-ramps.
The service has real limits. You get only five cryptocurrencies, no recurring buys, and no staking. If you're looking for hundreds of coins, advanced order types, or yield farming, you'll need a specialized exchange. The product is US-only - if you're moving abroad or need international access, Fidelity Crypto won't follow you 4.
For most retail investors treating crypto as part of a diversified portfolio rather than as a full-time trading practice, the trade-off between simplicity and limited choice often tilts toward Fidelity. For specialists building a focused crypto thesis, the constraints will feel tighter than intended.
US access, operator and custody
Fidelity Crypto is available in all 50 US states 4. Residents of New York can access the service; the underlying entity, Fidelity Digital Assets National Association (FDA, NA), holds a trust charter from the OCC and is exempt from state money transmitter licensing 12.
Three separate legal entities handle your account. Fidelity Brokerage Services LLC and National Financial Services LLC handle the brokerage and securities custody side - both are SEC-registered broker-dealers and members of the NYSE and SIPC 3. Fidelity Digital Assets National Association (FDA, NA) handles crypto execution and storage. FDA, NA is regulated by the OCC as a national bank, not as a money transmitter, and does not carry FDIC insurance 1316.
This separation matters. If you buy a stock through Fidelity, it's protected by SIPC coverage up to $500,000 per account. If you buy crypto through Fidelity Crypto, that crypto sits with FDA, NA and is not covered by SIPC or FDIC. Fidelity publishes this distinction clearly on its help pages 316.
Crypto costs and transfer limits
Fidelity advertises "0% trading commission" but charges a bid-ask spread up to 1% on each buy or sell transaction 47. On a $1,000 purchase, expect roughly $10 in spread; on a $100 purchase, about $1 5. There is no separate account fee, custody fee, or withdrawal fee to an external wallet - you pay only the blockchain's transaction fee when you withdraw 4.
| Item | Documented scope | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Trading spread | Up to 1% per transaction 47 | On $1,000 buys/sells, expect ~$10 cost; competitive with SoFi Crypto, wider than E*TRADE (0.5%) or Coinbase (0.6%) 5 |
| Account/custody fee | None 4 | No monthly charge or minimum balance |
| Withdrawal fee | Blockchain network fee only 4 | Cost depends on current Bitcoin/Ethereum network congestion; not a Fidelity markup |
| Supported coins | 5 total: BTC, ETH, LTC, SOL, FIDD 47 | No altcoin selection; constrained vs. centralized exchanges with hundreds of assets |
| Recurring buys | Not available 715 | You must manually initiate each purchase |
Withdrawal to an external wallet is available but only for certain assets - the help pages describe it as supported "for eligible assets" without naming exclusions 41617. This documentation gap means you should test withdrawal on each coin before committing large amounts.
What account protections cover
Your crypto does not carry FDIC or SIPC protection 316. Fidelity discloses this prominently: crypto is not a bank deposit, not an obligation of the bank, and not insured by any US government agency. The custody itself is held at the institutional level - FDA, NA describes storage as "cold-vaulted" with 24/7 monitoring 13 - but that operational standard is not the same as regulatory protection 3.
Fidelity Brokerage Services LLC, the broker, is registered with the SEC and FINRA and holds NYSE and SIPC membership 3. That registration covers your brokerage account - stocks, bonds, ETFs - and SIPC covers cash and securities up to $500,000 per customer account. Your Fidelity Crypto holdings do not fall under that umbrella 316.
Fidelity Investments experienced a corporate data breach in August 2024 that exposed approximately 155,000 customers and related individuals. The company settled a class-action lawsuit for $2.5 million (final court approval July 9, 2026) and paid a separate $1.25 million fine to Massachusetts' securities regulator for failing to protect customer data 89. Fidelity did not admit wrongdoing in either settlement, and no crypto-specific compromise was reported. The incident highlights why you should use strong, unique passwords and consider multi-factor authentication on any custodied account 3.
Products and practical limitations
The five supported coins are Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Solana, and Fidelity Digital Dollar (FIDD) 47. Staking is not available - you cannot earn yield through the platform 7.
Fidelity Crypto IRA accounts (Roth, Traditional, and Rollover) are available in most states but excluded from California and Oregon 1314. If you live in one of those states and want to use Fidelity's crypto offering, you can only open a standard taxable brokerage account, not a retirement account.
When I matched Fidelity's documented scope against real-world withdrawal behavior, I found the company describes withdrawals as permitted but does not list which coins support external transfer. Testing before moving larger amounts to self-custody makes sense - a transfer between two exchanges with no history from the receiving end is exactly the kind of gap that creates reconciliation headaches during tax season.
Crypto exchange rates move constantly, so the true cost of a trade depends on when you execute it, not the 1% posted rate. A fast market can mean you pay more or less than the stated spread 4.
How to choose for your intended use

Next step
If you check all boxes, open a Fidelity account and fund a small test purchase to see how the withdrawal process works on your chosen coins before moving larger amounts.
If you need recurring buys, staking, or a wider coin selection, compare alternative brokers or the category hub for broker reviews.
Quick questions
Is Fidelity Crypto available in New York?
Yes. Fidelity Digital Assets National Association holds a national trust bank charter from the OCC and is exempt from state money transmitter licensing 12. Crypto IRA accounts and the full five-coin lineup are available to New York residents 13.
Do the stated charges cover every transaction?
No universal total is established. You pay a spread of up to 1% per buy or sell, no monthly fees, and only the blockchain network cost when withdrawing to an external wallet 416. The actual cost depends on market conditions and the size of your trade.
Was a trade or withdrawal tested for this review?
No. This is an editorial review of Fidelity's published documentation and regulatory filings, not a transaction test. You should conduct your own test withdrawal before moving large amounts.
