GLOBAL is an international evidence profile. Local restrictions and product eligibility still apply; it does not establish worldwide permission.
Robinhood runs crypto trading through a separate legal entity, and that structure shapes almost every practical question a US buyer will ask. This review works only from a dated evidence evidence record: who operates the service, where it reaches, what it costs, and what regulators have already acted on. No account was opened and no trade was placed for it, so what follows is a read of documentation, not an account of hands-on use.
Who this crypto broker suits
Robinhood Financial LLC is the broker-dealer of record for retail accounts, operating in the US 25, while crypto trades route through Robinhood Crypto, LLC. The combined setup favors a specific reader: someone who wants one app for stocks and a shortlist of coins, buys on a schedule, and does not need deep on-chain control.
For that reader the fit is reasonable. A US resident who trades mainstream assets casually and accepts custodial holding gets a low-friction path. The fit weakens fast for anyone who needs a broad coin menu, dependable on-chain withdrawal of every asset, or a crypto retirement account. Because crypto sits inside a non-FINRA entity, the protections you might assume from a brokerage account do not carry over to crypto balances by default.
US access, operator and custody
One brand covers four entities with different jobs. Robinhood Financial LLC handles retail accounts. Robinhood Securities, LLC does the clearing. Robinhood Crypto, LLC runs crypto, holds the relevant licenses, and is not a FINRA member for its crypto operations 246. Robinhood Money, LLC acts as the money transmitter. Keeping these straight matters because the entity you contract with for a coin is not the one that gives securities-side protections.
At the platform level, the US record shows availability as yes with no excluded states as of 2026-09-25 1011. Read that as app access, not per-product eligibility. New York is its own scope: crypto there rests on the BitLicense granted to Robinhood Crypto, LLC on 2019-01-24 724, so a New York reader should treat blanket US statements as a starting point, not a guarantee that every feature is available in state.
Custody is custodial. Robinhood Crypto holds coins on corporate addresses and does not hand clients their private keys 12. A separate non-custodial product, Robinhood Wallet, exists for readers who want to hold keys themselves.
Crypto costs and transfer limits
The per-trade commission is nominally zero, and the real cost lives in the spread. Through the default market-maker routing, Robinhood Crypto takes about $0.95 for every $100 of volume, as of 2026-06-15 1. That is not a line item you see at checkout; it is baked into the price you get. Recurring buys run with no commission and a $1 minimum 1617. Moving coins to an outside wallet works for some assets, not all, and the activation path carries its own waiting period.
| Documented item | Exact dated value / scope | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Per-trade commission | None; spread-based model (2026-06-15) 1 | No visible fee line; the cost sits in the spread |
| Spread routing | About $0.95 per $100 of volume via market-maker routing (2026-06-15) 1 | Default route embeds the cost you pay |
| Recurring buy | Yes, $1 minimum, no commission (2026-09-25) 1617 | Scheduled buying is supported |
| External wallet transfer | Some coins only; verification and 2FA, up to 5 business days to activate (2026-09-25) 12 | Not every asset can leave the platform on-chain |
| Crypto IRA | Not offered (2026-09-25) 15 | Tax-advantaged crypto holding is unavailable here |
| FDIC/SIPC on crypto | Disclosed as not covered (2026-09-25) 6 | Crypto differs from cash and securities protections |
What account protections cover
Registration and insurance are not the same thing, and the evidence record keeps them apart. The brokerage side is SEC and FINRA registered, and the company discloses that crypto is not FDIC or SIPC insured 346. SIPC protects securities and cash against a brokerage failure, not against market losses, and it does not reach crypto held by Robinhood Crypto. Registration itself is not an endorsement of safety.
The enforcement record is the part worth reading closely. In 2022, the New York Department of Financial Services entered a consent order against Robinhood Crypto for violations of state BSA/AML and cybersecurity rules (23 NYCRR Part 200/500/504, 3 NYCRR Part 417), settled on 2022-08-01 with a $30 million penalty 7821. Separately, customers could not withdraw purchased crypto from 2018 to 2022; that episode was settled with the California Department of Justice for $3.9 million in September 2024 20.
There is older, non-crypto history too. In March 2020, systemic outages at peak volatility came with restrictions on buying options and stocks, and customers received partial compensation 1819; the same conduct fed FINRA's $70 million penalty in 2021, its largest at the time 18. These are dated, settled matters, not an ongoing state of the service - but they tell you where the operator has slipped before. You can read more on our methodology for how weight gets assigned.
Products and practical limitations
The supported feature set is narrower than a dedicated exchange. Staking is offered for ETH and SOL 1617, recurring buys work as described above, and crypto IRAs are not available 15. A company-level feature flag does not prove every state or account can use it, so treat each as a starting point to confirm in your own setup.
Published coin counts differ across sources, and this evidence record does not settle on a single number, so I would not quote one. External transfers cover a limited list of networks and need verification before the first send 1214. None of this implies a workflow was run end to end for this review; it is the documented boundary, not a walkthrough. For records and reporting, see Robinhood tax forms and records.
How to choose for your intended use
Run your plan against the evidence before you fund anything. The checklist below mirrors the decision points the evidence record actually speaks to.
- Identity and geography: Confirm you are a US resident. If you are in New York, note that crypto access there rests on the NY BitLicense basis, not on blanket US availability.
- Intended operation: Decide whether you want simple buy, hold and recurring purchases, or broad coin choice with reliable on-chain movement.
- Documented cost or status limit: Expect a spread-based cost near $0.95 per $100, not a true zero total.
- Custody and provider boundary: Crypto is held custodially by Robinhood Crypto; the separate Robinhood Wallet is the non-custodial route.
- Next step: If custodial holding and a short coin list suit you, the app covers it. If you need every asset withdrawable or a crypto IRA, this record points you elsewhere, such as a related service profile.
