SoFi Crypto is the digital-asset arm of SoFi Technologies, Inc., the Nasdaq-listed fintech trading under SOFI 27. After retiring retail crypto in 2023, SoFi Bank, N.A. relaunched trading on 2025-11-11 as a national bank offering it directly to consumers 78. This review works only from the imported evidence evidence record, so every figure below carries its checked date and nothing is tested by hand.
Who this crypto broker suits
The product fits a fairly specific reader: someone who already banks or invests with SoFi, wants to buy and hold a short list of major coins inside one app, and is fine with a markup built into the price rather than a published commission. That bundle is the draw. If you expect to move most of your coins to a wallet you control, run a crypto IRA, or stake for yield, this is a weaker match - those paths are limited or absent in the supplied record 141920. US residents who value having banking, investing, and crypto in a single app will see the clearest reason to use it. Everyone else should weigh the custody and transfer limits before deciding, because the convenience comes with real boundaries.
US access, operator and custody
The crypto product is operated by SoFi Bank, N.A., a national bank supervised by the OCC 614. That is a different entity from SoFi Securities LLC, the FINRA- and SIPC-member broker-dealer that handles stocks and ETFs but not the crypto product 6. Sitting above both is the contracting parent, SoFi Technologies, Inc., a US company 27. Keeping these straight matters, because protections attach to the entity, not to the shared brand.
On geography, the evidence record records US availability as yes, with no excluded states as of 2026-09-26 9. Coverage runs to all 50 states and the District of Columbia. New York residents are included, which is worth flagging - a BitLicense was granted to SoFi Digital Assets, LLC on 2019-12-03 123. The evidence record documents NY as in scope but does not settle whether current access rests on that BitLicense or on the national bank charter after the 2025 relaunch. There is no international offering: GLOBAL availability is recorded as no 9. Custody is held by SoFi Bank, N.A., so you do not hold private keys unless you withdraw coins to an external wallet.
Crypto costs and transfer limits
SoFi does not publish a flat trading commission for crypto; the cost lives in the spread. An E*TRADE comparison dated 2026-05-18 lists SoFi at 0% commission with a 1.00% markup, roughly $10 on a $1,000 trade 11. Independent reviews from TechRadar and Bitget Academy cite a 1.25% markup instead 1213; those figures are undated and may predate the relaunch. An official SoFi Crypto Fee Sheet took effect on 2026-06-22, so a governing rate document exists even though the quoted number shifts between sources 10.
The same independent reviews list a $10 minimum order and a $50,000 daily maximum 1213 - again, numbers that may be older than the current product. Recurring buys run on daily, weekly, biweekly, and monthly schedules, with funding only from a SoFi Checking or Savings account 17. That ties the feature to holding a SoFi bank account.
Transfers out are partial. As of 2026-09-26, external wallet withdrawal works for 12 of the supported assets - AAVE, BTC, ETH, LTC, LDO, LINK, SHIB, SOL, UNI, USDC, XLM, and XRP 1415. Everything else is trade-only inside the app. Earlier in 2026, withdrawals did not work at all, which drew user complaints before the feature arrived 16.
| Documented item | Dated value / scope | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Trading commission and markup | 0% commission with a 1.00% markup per an E*TRADE comparison dated 2026-05-18, and 1.25% per undated independent reviews 111213 | Your cost is in the price spread, not a line-item fee; confirm the live markup first |
| Official fee schedule | SoFi Crypto Fee Sheet, effective 2026-06-22 10 | A current fee document governs the rates; read it before funding |
| Order size limits | $10 minimum, $50,000 daily maximum per independent reviews 1213 | Caps larger single-day moves; figures may predate the 2025 relaunch |
| Recurring buys | Yes, funded only from SoFi Checking or Savings as of 2026-09-26 17 | No scheduled buys without a SoFi bank account to draw from |
| External wallet withdrawal | Some: 12 of the supported assets as of 2026-09-26 1415 | Many coins are trade-only and cannot leave the app |
What account protections cover
Here is the line that matters most: SoFi discloses that crypto and other digital assets are not bank deposits and are not insured by the FDIC or SIPC 6. That disclosure runs across its product and education pages. The SEC- and FINRA-registered status in the record belongs to the group's broker-dealer and investment-adviser entities, which serve stocks, ETFs, and advisory accounts, not the crypto product operated by the bank 16. Reading the broker-dealer registration as coverage for your coins would be a mistake.
Two items in the enforcement and incident history deserve attention, and neither is crypto-specific. In May 2024, FINRA fined SoFi $1.1 million and issued a censure over Customer Identification Program and Identity Theft Prevention Program deficiencies in the SoFi Money cash-management unit 2629. Between December 2018 and April 2019, a largely automated process approved about 800 accounts for third parties who stole $8.6 million from customers of other banks, roughly $2.5 million of it moved through SoFi Money accounts. SoFi self-reported the problem to FINRA and settled without admitting or denying the findings 2629.
Separately, a class action, Joshua Cook v. SoFi Technologies, Inc., was filed on 2026-02-27 in the Northern District of California over a data breach tied to late 2025 25. It alleges exposure of at least 38,049 customers' names, birth dates, addresses, emails, phone numbers, and work or education details. No compensation is recorded, and the matter is unresolved.
Products and practical limitations
Recurring buys are confirmed and flexible on schedule, funded from a SoFi bank account 17. Past that, the product is deliberately narrow. SoFi markets 25+ cryptocurrencies across its product pages, though its own support page cites 29 917; the exact count varies by source and date, so treat any specific number as approximate.
Staking is recorded as not offered. The evidence record found SoFi's educational articles explaining staking as a concept, with no confirmation that it runs as an account feature 20. A crypto IRA is likewise recorded as not available - the 2026 IRA guide describes the idea generally without stating SoFi provides such an account 19. A missing feature field here is not proof the feature can never exist; it reflects what the documentation establishes as of 2026-09-26. For anyone planning to self-custody, the hard limit is that only 12 assets can leave the app to a private wallet 14.
How to choose for your intended use
Match your intended use against what the record actually supports before you fund anything. The checklist below walks the decision in the order that usually trips people up: who you are, what you want to do, what it costs, where your coins sit, and the step after that.
- Identity and geography: Are you a US resident? The product covers all 50 states and DC, including New York, as of 2026-09-26, with no international access 9.
- Intended operation: Buying and holding major coins, or moving them out? External withdrawal works for only 12 assets 1415.
- Documented cost limit: The markup sits between 1.00% and 1.25% across sources 111213; check the fee sheet effective 2026-06-22 for the governing rate 10.
- Custody and provider boundary: SoFi Bank, N.A. holds assets custodially, and crypto is not FDIC- or SIPC-insured 6.
- Next step: Read the current fee sheet and the 12-asset transfer list before committing funds.
Quick questions
Is SoFi Crypto available in New York? Yes - the evidence record records New York residents as in scope as of 2026-09-26, alongside all 50 states and DC 9. A 2019 BitLicense sits behind the NY history 1, though the evidence record does not settle the current legal basis after the 2025 relaunch.
Do the stated charges cover every transaction? No. The markup applies to trades, but no single total covers every route; recurring buys, trades, and withdrawals each follow their own rules 1017.
Was a trade or withdrawal tested for this review? No. This is an editorial review of supplied documentation, not a hands-on test.
Want the governing numbers before you commit? Start with SoFi's current fee sheet and the transfer-eligible asset list, then weigh them against your own plan to trade or self-custody. For how we weigh entity records like this one, see how CoinReckon assesses services. Tax paperwork sits outside this review; for that, see SoFi Crypto tax forms and records.
