GLOBAL is an international evidence profile. Local restrictions and product eligibility still apply; it does not establish worldwide permission.
Interactive Brokers runs a global electronic brokerage that bolted crypto onto an existing stocks, options, futures and bonds platform, with the actual coin trading handled by outside providers. This review reads only the documented record on file: what the evidence record establishes for US and New York readers, the dated costs, and where the data simply stops.
Who this crypto broker suits
The crypto product here is an add-on to a full brokerage account, not a standalone exchange. Interactive Brokers LLC is the US operator, headquartered in Greenwich, CT, and crypto spot sits alongside crypto ETPs and futures rather than replacing them 1. If you already want one login for equities and a low per-trade crypto commission, that fit is reasonable. If your priority is staking or deep altcoin coverage, the record points the other way: twelve assets are documented for US clients, and staking is not part of the published product set 16. Readers who write to us about IBKR usually already hold a securities account and want to keep crypto under the same roof, and that is the scenario this profile speaks to best. Think of it as a trading venue for a handful of major coins, not a crypto-first wallet.
US access, operator and custody
Three things sit behind one brand, and they are worth keeping apart. The contracting US entity is Interactive Brokers LLC, a US-jurisdiction broker-dealer 1. Execution and custody of the actual coins are not done in-house: for US accounts they run through Paxos Trust Company or Zero Hash LLC, depending on account type and residency 1. So your brokerage relationship and your crypto custody relationship are with different companies.
Availability for the US is recorded as active, with no excluded states listed as of the 2026-09-25 check 6. New York matters here because many crypto services carve it out. On this record, eligibility is set at the country level rather than the state level, and the United States appears without a New York exclusion, so a New York resident is treated the same as any other US client under the documented rule. That is an inference from the absence of a state carve-out, not a New York-specific confirmation line, and it is worth reading that way. Registration with US regulators, covered next, is not the same as a stamp of approval on the crypto product.
Crypto costs and transfer limits
Spot crypto trades on a sliding commission tied to your trailing 30-day volume, with no separate spread or markup added on top 6. The published US tiers run 0.18% of trade value at or below USD 100,000 a month, 0.15% between that and USD 1 million, and 0.12% above USD 1 million. Every order carries a USD 1.75 minimum, capped so the commission never exceeds 1% of the trade 6.
If you hold a Paxos-linked account, Interactive Brokers passes through a flat USD 0.15 monthly fee that Paxos charges 6. Moving crypto you already own from an outside wallet or exchange into the platform is billed at the same 0.12% to 0.18% commission, not a flat transfer fee 1.
Two cautions on withdrawals. The record supports moving some assets back out to an external wallet, not all of them: the withdrawable list is narrower than the tradable list and varies by provider and entity 1. A fixed per-coin wallet withdrawal fee, for example a set amount in BTC, is not part of this snapshot, so treat any such charge as something to confirm at the account level rather than a known number.
| Documented item | Dated value / scope | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| US platform availability | Active, no excluded states (as of 2026-09-25) | Platform access, not proof you qualify for every coin or feature |
| US operating entity | Interactive Brokers LLC, US jurisdiction (as of 2026-09-26) | Your broker; custody sits with a separate provider |
| Spot commission | 0.12%-0.18% by 30-day volume, USD 1.75 order minimum (per pricing page) | Cost scales down with volume; small trades hit the minimum |
| US tradable coins | 12 assets (as of 2026-09-26) | The exact set depends on your custody provider |
| Global tradable coins | 17 assets, EEA scope (as of 2026-09-26) | A non-US figure; do not read it as a US count |
| Wallet withdrawal | Some assets, varies by provider (as of 2026-09-25) | Confirm your specific coin is withdrawable before relying on it |
What account protections cover
Interactive Brokers LLC is registered with the SEC and CFTC and is a member of the NYSE, FINRA and SIPC 1. That registration governs the broker-dealer, and it tells you nothing about any single coin being insured. The crypto itself is held by Paxos Trust Company or Zero Hash LLC, so the protections attached to your cash and securities do not automatically wrap around your crypto balance. The evidence record does not spell out a specific FDIC or SIPC coverage line for crypto holdings, and it does not disclose proof-of-reserves, key-storage method or a provider audit, so none of that should be assumed.
Registration also is not a clean bill of health, and the enforcement record is the reason to say so plainly. In July 2025, Interactive Brokers LLC settled with OFAC over 12,367 alleged violations of several US sanctions programs spanning July 2016 to January 2024, paying USD 11,832,136 after a voluntary self-disclosure 15. In 2020 the firm settled with the SEC for repeatedly failing to file Suspicious Activity Reports on microcap trades, with parallel FINRA and CFTC actions bringing the combined total to USD 38 million; that case was not crypto-specific 16. A smaller 2025 Hong Kong penalty hit a separate group entity, not the US operator 16. These are settled matters, and they describe compliance history rather than the safety of any crypto you hold today.
Products and practical limitations
Beyond spot, the documented product set includes crypto ETPs and crypto futures with options on those futures 1. Staking is not listed on the published product pages, so the record carries it as not offered; read that as an absence in the catalog rather than a feature the company has promised to add 6.
The coin counts need care. Twelve assets are documented for US clients, while the global figure of 17 comes from the EEA profile and should stay there 1. A European list is not a US menu, and the specific coins a given US account can trade depend on whether it is wired to Zero Hash or Paxos. Two workflow questions sit outside this data: whether recurring crypto buys and crypto IRA accounts are available is not established here, so neither should be assumed from the equity-side features that do exist.
How to choose for your intended use
Match your actual plan against what the record supports before you open anything. The checklist below walks the same order we use on CoinReckon: who you are contracting with, what you mean to do, what it costs, where custody sits, and the next move.
- Identity and geography: Confirm you are a US resident; the US is covered with no listed state exclusions, and New York falls under the same country-level rule.
- Intended operation: Decide whether you want spot, ETPs or futures, and know that staking is not on the documented menu.
- Cost or status limit: Expect 0.12%-0.18% per trade with a USD 1.75 minimum, plus a USD 0.15 monthly Paxos pass-through if your account uses Paxos.
- Custody and provider boundary: Remember the coins sit at Paxos or Zero Hash, not with the broker, and proof-of-reserves is not disclosed.
- Next step: Verify your specific coins and withdrawal options on the official account screens before funding, since the tradable and withdrawable lists differ.
Quick questions
Is Interactive Brokers available in New York? Yes, on this record: eligibility is set by country, the United States appears with no state exclusions, and the crypto providers behind the service are already authorized to serve New York 6. The coin set is the same twelve documented for US clients, with no separate New York list on this record.
Do the stated charges cover every transaction? No. There is no single all-in total; each cost stays tied to its route, with commission on trades, the same commission again on transfers in, and a separate Paxos monthly fee where that provider applies 6.
Was a trade or withdrawal tested for this review? No. This is an editorial review of the supplied documentation, not a hands-on test of execution, speed or withdrawals.
The practical next step is simple: hold this record against your own plan and confirm the specifics on the official account screens before funding. From there, start at the category hub, compare notes with a related service profile, or scan all crypto service reviews. Our review logic is laid out in how CoinReckon assesses services, and if something here looks wrong, send an editorial correction.
