Cash App is a payments app from Block, Inc. that lets US users buy and sell bitcoin inside a brokerage model. This review works only from a documented snapshot: what the dated record shows about access, cost, custody and regulatory history, and where that record stops.
Who this crypto broker suits
The service fits a US adult who wants to buy small amounts of bitcoin alongside everyday payments, not a trader chasing a broad coin menu. Block, Inc., a US company headquartered in Oakland, California (checked 2026-09-26), operates Cash App, and bitcoin is the single investable crypto asset on the platform 211. If your plan is dollar-cost averaging into bitcoin with recurring buys, the documented record lines up with that use. If you want to stake your coins or hold them in a crypto IRA, the record shows neither on offer, and the coin list stops at bitcoin. New York residents can use the bitcoin feature, but several newer 2026 functions carry New York carve-outs, so read the geography line before you assume a product applies to you 7.
US access, operator and custody
Three different entities sit behind what looks like one app. Block, Inc. is the US parent and operator 2. Cash App Investing LLC is a separate SEC-registered broker-dealer and FINRA/SIPC member that handles stock brokerage, not the bitcoin feature 6. For New York, Block describes its activity as running through Block of Delaware, Inc., while the NYDFS regulated-entities registry lists the virtual-currency license holder as Block, Inc. (formerly Square, Inc.), dated June 2018 726.
Bitcoin buying is available across all 50 states, with no excluded states on the record as of 2026-09-26 1011. New York counts as a distinct scope: the bitcoin feature is available there under the NYDFS license, but 2026 additions like stablecoin payments and certain promotions explicitly exclude New York residents 7. Platform access is not the same as per-product eligibility.
On custody, Cash App lets you move bitcoin out to an outside wallet, exchange or custody solution 17. Since bitcoin is the only tradable asset, withdrawals to an external wallet cover bitcoin only 1017.
Crypto costs and transfer limits
Cash App's bitcoin commission steps down as the trade size rises. On the official fee page (checked 2026-09-25), a market buy or sell runs 2.0% under $500, 1.5% from $500 to $999, 0.9% from $1,000 to $1,999, and 0% at $2,000 and above 10. Automatic purchases carry no commission at any size 710. A spread of 0% to 0.75% can apply on top, built into the price you see at confirmation, and that spread is also waived on automatic buys and on trades of $2,000 or more 10. A third-party calculator lists a slightly different range of 0.75% to 3% plus a 0% to 1% spread, so the exact cost on a single trade depends on which schedule and market conditions apply at the moment 11.
There is no subscription fee attached to the bitcoin feature in the record. Recurring buys start at a $10 minimum 7. For transfers, bitcoin can move out to an external wallet, but no universal per-transaction total is established in the evidence record, and each cost stays tied to its own route.
| Documented item | Dated value / scope | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| US availability | Yes, no excluded states (checked 2026-09-26) | Platform access, not proof a single product fits your state |
| Recurring buy | Available (checked 2026-09-25) | Auto Invest and Round Ups run at 0% commission |
| Crypto IRA | Not offered (checked 2026-09-25) | No retirement-account route for bitcoin here |
| SEC/FINRA registration | Cash App Investing LLC, broker-dealer (checked 2026-09-25) | Covers stock brokerage, not the bitcoin feature |
| No FDIC/SIPC on crypto | Disclosed (checked 2026-09-25) | Bitcoin holdings carry no deposit or investor insurance |
| CFPB consent order | $55 million, settled 2025-01-16 | Dated enforcement over security and dispute handling |
What account protections cover
The insurance labels here only reach part of the app. Cash App Investing LLC is registered with the SEC as a broker-dealer and is a FINRA and SIPC member, which applies to its stock brokerage 6. Cash App discloses that bitcoin is not covered by FDIC or SIPC protection, so your crypto balance sits outside both deposit insurance and investor protection 267. Keep those two layers apart: securities coverage does not extend to your bitcoin.
The enforcement history is the part that should weigh on the decision. On 2025-01-16 the CFPB issued a $55 million consent order over weak security protocols and incomplete investigations of disputed, unauthorized Cash App transactions, and Block settled 130. One day earlier, 48 state regulators coordinated through the CSBS imposed an $80 million penalty for BSA/AML failures 3. On 2025-04-10 the NYDFS issued a $40 million consent order over BSA/AML and KYC gaps, including 8,359 accounts tied to a Russian criminal network, and required an independent monitor 2. The three 2025 settlements total $175 million, and Block neither admitted nor denied the findings 123.
On the breach side, a 2021 incident of unauthorized access to reports holding customer data was folded into the consolidated Salinas v. Block Inc. lawsuit, which reached a settlement with partial compensation to affected customers 4.
Products and practical limitations
Bitcoin is the only investable crypto asset on Cash App, confirmed both by the service's own fee page and by independent coverage 1011. Recurring buys come in three forms: Auto Invest on a set schedule from a $10 minimum, Round Ups that convert spare change on card purchases into bitcoin, and Paid in Bitcoin, which routes a share of direct deposit into bitcoin 710. Stablecoin payments in USDC arrived in 2026 as a send-and-receive function with in-app conversion to dollars, not as an investment product 7.
The record does not show staking or a crypto IRA on the platform 710. A company-level product flag is not proof that every state or account can use it, and the New York carve-outs on newer features are a live example. Treat the external-wallet withdrawal path as documented for bitcoin, without assuming it behaves the same way for any other asset.
How to choose for your intended use
Match your own plan against what the dated record actually supports before you fund an account. The checklist below walks through the points that change the answer.
- Identity and geography: Confirm you are a US adult, and if you live in New York, check each feature's own availability line rather than assuming the whole app applies 710.
- Intended operation: Decide whether you want recurring bitcoin buys, supported from a $10 minimum, or staking, altcoins or a crypto IRA, which the record does not show 710.
- Documented cost limit: Expect 0% to 2.0% commission on manual buys depending on size, 0% on automatic buys, plus a possible 0% to 0.75% spread 10.
- Custody boundary: Remember bitcoin withdrawals go to an external wallet, and crypto sits outside FDIC and SIPC protection 617.
- Next step: If the fit holds, read the service's own current fee and eligibility pages before funding; if not, compare a broader broker.
