Access and exclusions

Availability not established.

BitConnect operated as a cryptocurrency exchange and investment platform that promised exceptionally high returns and ceased operations in January 2018 following regulatory action. Multiple US authorities have documented the service as fraudulent, and the case resulted in criminal convictions and over $17 million in restitution to victims.

Current documented status

The Texas State Securities Board issued an emergency cease-and-desist order on January 4, 2018, halting the sale of BitConnect's investment programs 1. The regulator determined that BitConnect's offerings were unregistered securities and characterized the sales as fraudulent. The company had publicly claimed market capitalization of $4.1 billion for its BitConnect Coin token and promised guaranteed returns exceeding 100 percent annually.

Following the Texas action, BitConnect shut down its exchange and lending program in mid-January 2018. The BCC token collapsed, losing approximately 92 percent of its value within weeks. Since that closure, no active service operates under the BitConnect name.

Which entity or domain the record names

BitConnect was registered as a legal entity in the United Kingdom but operated a web-based platform. Two domains appear in official authority records: bitconnect.co and bitconnectcoin.co, named in the Ontario Securities Commission warning of April 17, 2018 4.

Item Documented scope Practical implication
Legal entity BitConnect (UK registered); founder Satish Kumbhani; US promoters Glenn Arcaro and others Criminal charges and SEC litigation name specific individuals and the company collectively; a warning about "BitConnect" covers the entity and its named agents.
Claimed operation Cryptocurrency exchange and investment lending platform The platform offered deposit-taking and promised returns tied to proprietary trading algorithms; SEC found no legitimate trading operation.
Domains bitconnect.co, bitconnectcoin.co Both were operated by the same service and shut down in January 2018; do not assume any active domain with a similar name is the same entity.
Geographic claim UK registered; operated globally; marketed to US investors; no state-by-state registration US residents, including New York residents, invested through the platform; Texas, North Carolina and other states issued warnings.
Token BitConnect Coin (BCC) Investors converted USD and other fiat to BCC on the platform, then "loaned" BCC back to BitConnect to earn promised returns; the token had no independent utility or external market until the scheme collapsed.

Timeline of warnings and actions

January 4, 2018 - Texas State Securities Board issues emergency cease-and-desist order. The regulator orders BitConnect to halt sales of its investment programs, finding them to be unregistered securities. The order cites promises of returns up to 1 percent daily through an undisclosed trading bot 1.

January 16-17, 2018 - BitConnect announces closure of its exchange and lending program. The company executes the shutdown, and the BCC token price crashes. FBI notes the complete market collapse occurring by late January 3.

April 17, 2018 - Ontario Securities Commission (Canada) issues a warning naming BitConnect, BitConnect Coin, and the BCC Exchange, citing unregistered dealer activity 4.

May 28, 2021 - SEC files civil suit against five BitConnect promoters (SEC v. Brown et al., S.D.N.Y.) for unregistered securities sales and unregistered broker-dealer activity. Alleged promoter commissions ranged from $475,000 to $2.6 million 5.

September 1, 2021 - SEC files suit against BitConnect, founder Satish Kumbhani, chief US promoter Glenn Arcaro, and Future Money Ventures. The SEC alleges a $2 billion fraud involving unregistered securities sales in the Lending Program, which promised returns of up to 1 percent daily from a proprietary trading bot described by the SEC as fictitious 5. The same day, the Department of Justice announces that Arcaro has agreed to plead guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud in federal court in San Diego 5.

September 16, 2021 - Arcaro enters guilty plea to conspiracy to commit wire fraud in US District Court, S.D. Cal. 8.

December 3, 2021 - Settlements with Arcaro and Future Money Ventures take effect. Both are subject to permanent officer-and-director bars; disgorgement, prejudgment interest, and civil penalties are to be determined by the court 8.

February 25, 2022 - Satish Kumbhani is indicted on charges including conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit commodity price manipulation, operation of an unlicensed money transmitter business, and international money laundering. Maximum exposure is 70 years imprisonment 10.

January 12, 2023 - A federal court in San Diego orders $17 million in restitution to approximately 800 victims. Restitution funds came from the sale of approximately $56 million in seized cryptocurrency 12.

What the status means for US readers

BitConnect is not operating and cannot be accessed or used. Texas and North Carolina state securities regulators issued official warnings in early 2018. Federal authorities - the SEC, DOJ, and FBI - have all taken enforcement action, establishing documented US jurisdiction over the scheme.

US residents who invested in BitConnect invested in what federal authorities determined to be an unregistered security sold through fraud. The platform accepted USD and other fiat currency and paid returns only through its internal BCC token, which was not traded on independent exchanges until after the scheme collapsed. No legitimate trading operation has been documented by any regulator.

New York residents fall under the same federal enforcement as other US residents. The SEC lawsuits were filed in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York, establishing documented federal involvement in New York's jurisdiction.

Funds, claims and official guidance

Restitution from the criminal case has been distributed. In January 2023, the federal court authorized $17 million in restitution to approximately 800 victims from the sale of seized assets 12. That distribution has been completed; no active restitution program is documented.

The FBI solicited victim information through a form posted in February 2019 3. That intake is concluded. No current claims process or recovery route for new claims appears in official guidance.

Be cautious of unsolicited contact from individuals or services claiming they can recover funds for a fee, expedite restitution payments, or "unlock" seized assets. Official court-ordered restitution was distributed through the Department of Justice and the courts - not through private intermediaries, and certainly not after payment of an upfront fee or surrender of cryptocurrency credentials.

Practical next steps and evidence limits

If you invested in BitConnect, this checklist helps organize what you have and what steps remain available.

Verify your records. Locate any documentation you have: email confirmations from BitConnect, transaction records showing deposits, statements of your BCC balance, and any correspondence from the platform. Screenshots or PDF exports of account pages made before January 2018 may be useful.

Check if you received restitution. If you received a payment from the Department of Justice or a court-ordered distribution in 2023, record the amount and date. Do not expect additional payments from that criminal case; restitution was completed in January 2023.

Report to authorities if you have not. File a report with the FBI at ic3.gov, the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov, and your state's securities regulator. The Texas State Securities Board received the first regulatory complaint; your state's regulator may have an active file or guidance for residents.

Document your loss. For tax reporting, maintain records showing the date of each deposit, the amount you invested, the date you learned the funds were lost or inaccessible, and any restitution received. Tax treatment of crypto fraud losses is complex; consult a CPA or tax professional familiar with crypto losses in your state.

Do not engage with recovery services. Scams targeting victims of high-profile fraud cases are common. Official restitution came through the courts and DOJ - no private service can "recover" or "unlock" those payments for a fee, and no service can change the fact that the scheme is closed.

Quick questions

Which BitConnect domain does the warning name? The official warnings from the Ontario Securities Commission and other authorities name bitconnect.co and bitconnectcoin.co. Both domains were operated by the same platform and shut down in January 2018. Do not assume any currently active domain with a similar name is connected to the original BitConnect.

Does the evidence record provide a recovery or claims route? No. Restitution from the criminal case ($17 million to approximately 800 victims) was completed in January 2023 and distributed through the Department of Justice and federal courts. No active claims process is documented. New victims cannot file for recovery through that mechanism.

Does an official warning establish every allegation as proven? No. A regulatory warning or cease-and-desist order establishes that a regulator found a violation and ordered the company to stop. The SEC's fraud allegations were the SEC's legal position in a civil lawsuit; some were settled or agreed to by defendants, while others remain unresolved. Criminal charges against an individual are allegations until proven in court. The guilty plea by Arcaro established his guilt on wire fraud charges; the case against founder Kumbhani involved charges but no final conviction appears in the available record.
